Just being silly after school today. Okay, I guess I have to confess. This is our bed. And it’s unmade. Sorry, Mom.

They look like a little gang of skinny-jeaned hipster hoodlums, don’t they? Too bad the tiny stuffed animals ruin the effect a bit.

Friendship Day – then and now

Our neighborhood has an annual block party the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day called Friendship Day. Everyone gathers on the levee, wears green, drinks green beer, and listens to music. We haven’t made it out for the past few years, but this year, we finally did for the first time in four years.

The last time we went, the boys looked like this:
The Fam

Linus and Daddy. And beer.

And this year, they looked like this:

Friends still reminisce how we were just handing babies to anyone who would hold one that first year, and things haven’t changed much. This year, a friend was tossing the boys up in the air and making them giggle at silly animal noises. I could say something really corny here about friends and Friendship Day, but I will resist.

One funny thing about this year is that we saw our friend’s baby, August. And August was born on the boys’ birthday, so he is exactly the same age as the boys were for their first Friendship Day. It really brought me back.

Our friend Grace giving August a kiss, just as she did to our boys four years ago.

Ahh, if I could tell you the heartache this tiny purple monkey has caused. McDonald’s gave us ONE of these, and two other, less desirable toys. And I can’t find any more. Yes, I went to other McD’s to find two more. Alas. So I only have one happy kid at a time. Sigh.

Oliver is good at multitasking.

(Try to ignore Miles’s bitching in the background about how he didn’t get enough cereal in his bag.)

Cut their hair again.

This time, Oliver got a closer cut, Linus had a bit less taken off, and I only trimmed around Miles’s ears. When their teacher told me how much the boys liked being called the right name {imagine!}, I knew I had to keep their hair different lengths.

George doesn’t like it, though. This summer we can always cut them all the same again. We’ll see.

Mardi Gras Half-Marathon Race Report

It’s weird to think that the first one of these I wrote was ten years ago, in the lead up to my first marathon. Which means that was almost ten years ago. And I met George a few days after I got back from London, so it’s been almost ten years since I met him. Crazy.

Anyway, this is going to be in no way as detailed as those race reports, but I do want to make sure I write down some of the details.

My friend Stephanie and her friend from Washington, Allison, were planning to do the race together. Allison was training for a marathon, but promised to stay at our pace. She was training using the Galloway method, which involves running and walking at intervals. She informed us that our intervals would be one minute running, one minute walking. Seemed fair.

The race started at 7 am, but since we were waaaaaay at the back, we didn’t get to the start line until 7:40.

Waiting…(me and Steph)
IMAG2502

Once we got to the start line, we immediately started running for one minute, walking for one minute. It was super easy, even though Steph and I hadn’t run too much during our “long” training run/walks. I had to pee, though, and there weren’t any port-a-potties until mile 2 or so. Tiny bladder strikes again! Once we got to them, we had to wait several minutes in line, but whatever. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Good thing about being in the back of the pack is seeing all the people in costume!
IMAG2503

As you can see, it was a gorgeous day. Well, it would have been gorgeous if I hadn’t been running. It was a tad sunnier than I’d like, and so we did get hot along the way, but it was too lovely to complain much otherwise.

I can’t say too much exciting happened during the race. We chugged along at our 1/1 pace pretty much the entire time. At one point, a woman saw my tank top and said, “Pam? I’m Amy K’s friend…she said to tell you hi!” That was fun. Pretty cool that she found me in a field of 20,000 runners!

I will say that near the end, Steph and I were cursing the woman on Allison’s phone who would tell us when to start running again, but then again, we’d sing her praises when she’d say it was time to walk. We decided that someone needs an app that uses more inspirational voices. Like, say, Ewan McGregor, or Liam Neeson, or similar. Pierce Brosnan telling me I was doing great would be a hell of a lot more motivational than that robotic phone voice.

15K! No idea how many miles that is. 9ish?
IMAG2504

We crossed the finish line officially in 3:04:55, but I know we were in line for the bathroom more than 5 minutes (we stopped twice) so I’m going to go ahead and say I met my goal of finishing in under three hours. Heh.

As I mentioned, my entire reason for signing up for this race was so that the boys could watch me cross the finish line. We even made flags a la car races for them to wave when I crossed. So I was getting pretty excited and emotional as we approached the finish line. Sadly, the combination of tens of thousands of people and three cranky little boys meant we missed each other at the end. But that just means I’ll have to sign up for another race! This time, a smaller, shorter one. 🙂

So happy to be done!

11 things

Jenni over at These Four No More tagged me in her post, and since it looks like a fun meme, I’ll run with it.

Here are the rules of the 11 Random Things game:

– post these rules
– post a picture of yourself & 11 random things
– answer the questions set for you in the original post
– create 11 new questions & tag people to answer them
– go to their blog/twitter and tell them you’ve tagged them

Picture of me:
Glam Pam

Okay, fine, so it’s over 6 years old, but come on, if I’m going to post a picture of myself, it may as well be one I love, right?

11 random things (cribbing mercilessly from my “about me” page)

1. I absolutely loathe Hootie and the Blowfish.
2. I absolutely loathe celery.
3. In sixth grade, I was the third best speller in our parish. (County for you non-Louisiana people.)
4. I can’t wear perfume anymore, due to my allergies. This makes me sad, because I discovered this fact right after George got me a new bottle of my favorite perfume. Seriously, I’m sneezing just writing about it.
5. I have an abnormally long torso and short legs. So even though I’m 5’10”, my legs are the same length as Kristina’s, and she’s 5’4″. I could never wear overalls as a child. (Guess overalls were very big in middle school.)
6. I wanted 2 kids. George wanted 1. Funny how things work out, eh?
7. I think if I could only eat one food for the rest of my life, it’d be pizza. (And dessert pizza counts.)
8. I hated New Orleans for the first few years I lived here, but now I can’t imagine living anywhere else. (Except England.)
9. I loved reading my sister’s Sweet Valley High books when I was younger, and was fascinated by twins, but I did not want them for myself. (Should have been more specific.) (Glad I wasn’t.)
10. My friend Joanna used to call my Pyjamela, which is where pyjammy came from.
11. I do not get the appeal of musicals. In the same vein, I do not like to watch shows like American Idol, and Glee’s charm wore off very quickly for me.

Okay, now to answer Jenni’s questions for me:

1. Where is your ideal vacation spot? London
2. What is your most favorite childhood memory? Probably family vacations, even though they involved sitting in the middle with my feet on the hump.
3. What Made for TV item would you love to try out? Well, I’m still waiting to try the Bedazzler.
4. What made you start blogging? I started when I was training for the 2002 London Marathon.
5. What blogs do you love to read? Oh, I have a ton in my Google Reader, but I love when I see entries from cooking blogs, even though I rarely cook from them. Smitten Kitchen, Joy the Baker, and The Way the Cookie Crumbles are my favorites. I also love Not Martha. There are also a ton of mom blogs I read, links are over there –>
6. Describe your favorite outfit. Jeans, my sequinned tank top from New Year’s, and my sequinned pink flats. (What can I say, I like sequins.)
7. Blogger or WordPress? WordPress all the way!
8. What’s your favorite TV show? Parks and Recreation!
9. What state do you live in? Louisiana
10. What would you do if you won the lottery? I suppose it depends on how big the jackpot is, but first, I’d pay off all of our debts, then buy a new, bigger house, and then, a loooong trip to London for all of us plus a nanny or two.
11. What’s your favorite store? Who doesn’t love Target? But considering 99% of my clothes come from Old Navy, I’d have to add that in. But my true favorite stores are the ones I never get to go to. IKEA, Trader Joe’s, Penzey’s. Sigh.

Okay, now I’m going to ask some questions of Kim, Shannan, and Helen

1. What would you do with $1000?
2. What’s your favorite flower?
3. What’s your favorite thing to cook?
4. What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
5. What’s your favorite season?
6. If you had one hour of free time to yourself, what would you do?
7. What is your favorite dessert?
8. What was your favorite cartoon or tv show as a child?
9. Describe your favorite item of clothing.
10. What is the most embarrassing CD or DVD you’ve owned?
11. What is your favorite scent?

51 months old! Love this because I think it shows how much they love each other. And how goofy Linus is.
