Ketchup: 365 in 2014

Oh, I haven’t been very good about this, have I?

6/14/14

I might have been a little overzealous in my removal attempts. I have always hated this stupid tile backsplash, but it looks like the bird doesn’t want to leave. We’re going to have to cut the sucker out. Worth it.

Went on a bike ride and ran into (thankfully not literally) my sweet Ann Frances!

Making shadows at Miles’s baseball practice. Oliver and Linus have been coming to them for one reason – the snack bar.

At least they’re not fighting over my iPads.

Wondering if this will make a more authentic Pimms & Lemonade than Sprite does. Only one way to find out!

Last day of kindergarten!

Oof. Slow down, time!

First day of school:

Today:

Hard to tell if they’re any bigger, since Oliver is standing funny, but they at least…have more hair?

Yesterday was the end of the year ceremony, which I decided to just watch and enjoy rather than try to photograph every moment. Just as well, since these were the only pictures I could get of the kids:

(If you look hard, you can see Oliver waving to me from the back row.)

After school today, the boys were being super cute saying bye to their friends and teachers.

More from the baseball game

It’s hard to believe we’re starting the third season of baseball in our decidedly non-sporty household. Well, Miles is. The last two seasons were t-ball, so this is for-real-this-time baseball. Like, no tee involved. And there are rules. And they keep score. And they wear belts with their baseball pants.

Miles was pretty anxious about starting without his brothers, so before the first game yesterday, I got him a bag for his equipment. Once he was all decked out in his full uniform and had his brand new bag, he seemed to gain a huge amount of confidence, and he did great at the game. He hit the ball both times he was at bat and even scored a run!

After the game was over, he was diligently putting his stuff back in his bag, and couldn’t figure out how to unclip the bag from the fence. One of the older boys on the team helped him, which was just so sweet. I’m used to him being one of the bigger boys, but in this league, he’s one of the youngest, and it’s so nice to see the older kids taking the littler ones under their wing.

Next game is Friday evening. Hope the novelty hasn’t worn off by then!

A day at the dentist

No cavities!

Trying to be clean here (the Whole30 challenge)

So kind of on a whim (which is typical of me), I decided to try to do the Whole30 challenge. It was the day before Easter when the idea came to me, so I thought, I’ll start the day after Easter so I can still indulge in my mom’s scalloped potatoes, the boys’ candy, and wine.

But then I remembered that I was leaving for a work trip to Chicago on May 1, and let’s face it, one of the highlights of these work trips are the meals and drinks. And Chicago? Hello, deep dish pizza! So I decided I could at least do a Whole 10 until I left. Better than nothing, right?

Here’s the lowdown on the Whole 30, in a nutshell:

  • no grains
  • no dairy
  • no added sugar or artificial sweetener
  • no soy
  • no legumes
  • nothing processed

Sounds fun, right? It’s not all that different from Dukan, which I had success on two years ago, so I knew I could do it if I wanted. And after seeing Jillian Michaels talk earlier this month, eating cleaner has been on my mind anyway.

What can I eat?

  • vegetables
  • meat!
  • eggs
  • nuts
  • avocados (mmmmmm)
  • fruits
  • healthy oils like olive oil, coconut oil, and ghee (clarified butter)

I’d say the biggest challenge has been artificial sweetener. Of course it’s crap, I should have given it up long ago, but black coffee is…not my thing. I’ve been drinking tea more, since that’s more palatable without sweetener in it. Pizza, which is one of the boys’ staples, is of course completely off the table, and when I took Miles to Costco the other day, the hardest part for me wasn’t the pizza (which is probably my favorite food on earth) but the lemonade. Mmmm, sweet, sweet lemonade. Alas.

I’m on day 9 now and feeling pretty great, except for my back, which I hurt about two weeks ago. (Good news, it’s just muscular, not anything disc-related.) So I haven’t been exercising as much as I’d like, but my eating has been good.

And now I’m contemplating not going off it for my Chicago trip.

But here’s where I have to confess, I’ve had a glass of wine here and there. And I might in Chicago, because I am only human. And possibly a slice of deep-dish pizza…

I’d love to know if anyone reading this has tried it, and if you have any tips or comments or questions about it….
