I got a new camera!

(Aside: apparently Oliver can read now, because as I typed this, he said, “Does that say, ‘I got a new camera”? And now he’s trying to read this. Huh.)

Ever since I started traveling for work, I’ve been thinking of a new camera. Something smaller and lighter, but not a crappy point and shoot. I was lugging my giant Canon 7D with me to meetups and not taking very many pictures at all. In Portland, I took one.

My coworkers seem fond of the new mirrorless cameras, but researching them just made me more confused, not less. So after hours of reading and agonizing, I bit the bullet and ordered a Samsung NX300. Aside from a few annoyances (Samsung only ships the software on a CD, you can’t download it, and our wi-fi password is too long, so I can’t transfer photos that way. Seriously?) I’m pretty enamored.

My 7D seemed grainier than my old 60D, no matter how bright or in focus a photo. But check these out. No editing except a bit of cropping.

(You can click to see them in all of their full-sized glory.)

Nice. I also love that I can buy more lenses and shoot in manual if I want.

Anyway, I’m going to Chicago in two weeks for work, so we’ll see if I take more than one picture while I’m there.

Pics at the park

Had some time to kill yesterday after school, so we went to the park. Millie was with us, and I had my camera with me since it was the fourth of the month. (That picture is forthcoming.)

Got some fun pics of the kids running and climbing.

Pulled out the camera again

While I love my iPhone, maybe more than any other gadget, I have to admit it’s been terrible for my photography. Which is funny since one of the reasons I wanted it, and one of the reasons I love it, is the camera. But it just means I rarely pull out my big camera, my Canon 7D. (I will say that my 85mm lens might be my second favorite “gadget”, or maybe third after my Kindle. Hmm.) (I don’t love my 7D as much because I feel like it’s grainy. Is it the camera? Did I get a bad one? I don’t know. But it disappoints me some. Sad.)

All of that to say, I brought it to the park for a playdate the boys had, and I took some pictures. Finally! Granted, mostly of kids other than my own…

My little Zoolanders

I gave the boys a quarter each to sit still for pictures. Linus looks like a heartthrob from the ’80s, don’t you think?

Baby Hank

This weekend, among many other things (more on those later), I took newborn photos of baby Hank. This is the only photo I’ve edited so far, and I’m in love with it. I was trying to go for something as dramatic as this photo I took of Ann Frances last year, and I think I succeeded. Love squishy babies!

Photography, old vs new

I’ve been into photography for a very long time. When I was ten years old, I got my first “real” camera, a Pentax K1000 SLR. Before that, I think there was a disc camera, and I seem to recall 126 film, and 110. (Surely I didn’t start with an SLR, but my memory is weak.) I took a photography class that year that also brought us into a darkroom. Man, I remember wanting a darkroom more than anything else in the world. I subscribed to Popular Photography (though goodness knows I probably only understood 1/4 of what I was reading) and was generally obsessed.

In high school, I joined the Photo Club and was elected president my senior year. I’m pretty sure the entire point of the photo club was to throw pizza parties, but my presidential status garnered me special darkroom privileges, which I took abundant advantage of. (I was also photo editor of the yearbook, but the less said about that, the better. If you happen to have a copy of the 1993 Louisiana School yearbook, please ignore the multitude of blank spots where photos were meant to go. Ahem.

I became interested in video production at the same time (my wonderful high school had a Media Center with not only the aforementioned darkroom, but also a video editing suite) and I was determined to major in that in college. I took one photography class in college, but I think my perception of any talent I had must have been deflated, because I didn’t pursue it any more after that.

Several years ago, I sent my brother my old Pentax K1000 to use for his movies, or something, and kind of forgot about it. But recently I remembered it, and asked him to send it back to me. I just got it yesterday, and hey, it’s fun! Even Linus was getting into it. Maybe he’ll follow in my (amateur photography enthusiast) footsteps!

Untitled

So different from a digital camera. Besides the obvious – the boys kept asking “where’s the screen?” – but the things you don’t think about. You can’t just adjust the ISO to whatever you want. You can’t take unlimited photos. You can’t change focus points. There’s no built-in flash. You must thoughtfully compose every shot because you’re going to be paying for those later. And don’t even get me started on focusing…

I can’t decide if I’m disappointed in the limitations of the SLR camera (or perhaps just this one), or if I’m in awe of the capabilities of a digital SLR. The shutter speed on my Pentax maxes out at 1/1000, while I can set my Canon to 1/8000. Crazy. On a bright day, if you’re shooting with ISO400 film, you might be SOL, especially if you to limit your depth of field.

I was lucky in that I was able to buy a ton of film from Walgreens for 75% off the other day, but it’s kind of sad that you can’t buy it easily anymore. I mean, it’s totally understandable that the only film was in the clearance bin (and close to expiration) but I’m sure I’ll be able to find it at the specialist camera stores. But I want my first shots to be on cheap film, in case the camera isn’t working correctly, or, you know, in case of (ahem) operator error. We’ll see.

Stay tuned for results…

My favorites of 2012

Now that I’ve finished yet another 365/6 project, I want to revisit my favorite photos of 2012. I don’t plan on doing this project again, I just hope to blog with words more than I have for the past three years. We shall see…

Anyway, not all of these are of my kids, not all were taken with my DSLR, and not all were even taken by me. But for one reason or another, I love these photos.

From the newborn shoot of my sweet birthday buddy, Ann Frances. She made a lot of appearances on my blog this year, along with her sister. I absolutely adore this sweet girl, and I love this picture of her with her daddy.

And this one is another baby-with-daddy photo I love. This baby, August, is the boys’ birthday buddy. I suppose he and Ann Frances are meant to be.

Just a sweet picture of Linus.

The boys were trying on their outfits for my friend’s wedding. I think this is by far my favorite outfit I’ve ever put on them. So adorable. This was also during the short-lived “different haircut” phase.

Here’s one I took with my old point-and-shoot, during swimming lessons this summer. You don’t think I’d bring my DSLR in the pool, do you?

Run!
Running away from Mommy while she was trying to take their monthly photo. It doesn’t get easier with time, that’s for sure.

Fun in the sand
So many pictures I love from our beach trip this summer. What a fantastic trip. The boys still ask when we’re going back.

Obviously I didn’t take this one, but I did set it up. Kiki was the photographer here. Just one of the rare photos of me and the boys.

08/26/12
My brother and niece came to visit for a few days this summer. I was so glad the boys got to spend time with Uncle Evan and Ellie, and am even more grateful they all cooperated for this photo. Yes, I’m including my brother in “they”.

The light here is just perfect. Love it. And it’s at my favorite po-boy restaurant, and it was when Kiki and Mike were visiting. So a lot of nice memories here. Yes, a delicious po-boy counts as a memory.

10/27/12
Another one obviously not taken by me. George took this with his phone, and it’s more about what it represents. He and the boys got to see me cross the finish line of a half-marathon I finished in record time. It was just such a fantastic moment for me. They were more interested in the Spiderman who finished before me, but what can ya do?

This was the photo I used one one of our holiday cards, and I will freely confess that it’s a composite. I had to switch out Oliver (on the right) from another shot. They were just SO over having their picture taken by this point. It was really hot, and they were just done. But I love the way it came out, and I love the setting. That’s a mural my cousin Clark (below) painted on the side of a building in downtown Baton Rouge.

Love this photo of my cousin Clark and his son Asa at Thanksgiving. My aunt’s house has so many gorgeous spots for photos, and I had lots of willing subjects. I’m pretty sure my cousin was cursing me at this point for making him continue to swing so I could get a good shot.

We took the boys for a walk on the levee, right at the time of day when the light is so golden and perfect, and I got a rare shot of George and his boys. Love.

There’s so much I love about this. We went to the zoo and the kids were climbing this tree when I pushed Mary Catherine out of the way so I could take this (nice of me, she’s 7 months pregnant.) I love the look on Millie’s face. You can read it so many ways, but only I have to know she really just wanted someone to get her down.

Some cute babies for you

This weekend, I got to see two of my friends’ babies that I don’t see very often, and of course I had my camera at the ready.

First, it was my birthday buddy, Ann Frances:

And then on Sunday, we got to hang with the boys’ birthday buddy, August:

I’ve decided this is my new favorite age to photograph. They’re happy and smiley and can hold themselves up, but aren’t yet mobile. Perfection!
