Self portrait of Oliver and myself. Must remember, nothing is less flattering that laying on back, taking self-portrait. I hope.

My coloring genius!

Oh, I totally forgot to post about this!

When I went to get the boys Friday afternoon, their teacher and the director were all excited about the picture Oliver colored that day. The words “exceptional” and “remarkable” were bandied about. (And for once, it wasn’t “they are exceptional whiners”.) Look, I don’t know when kids are supposed to color in the lines. This is how I expect 3 year olds to color pictures:

Adorable, right? I love Linus’s exuberance and Miles’s, uh, creativity. But check out Oliver’s picture…

That’s kinda crazy, huh? I really would have expected it more from Miles, who I’ve always considered the most “artistic”. But I also think this has more to do with Oliver’s kind of, well, fastidious nature. My little neat freak! Just like his Uncle Evan, who used to vacuum my room for me.

The weekend

We had such a nice weekend, I feel like I should recap it. The best part was that the weather was just gorgeous. Unseasonably cool for a New Orleans May, the temperature stayed in the 70s most of the time. Nice!

Friday afternoon, I picked up the boys and headed to our neighborhood pub. Yeah, only in New Orleans. There were lots of kids there, drawing on the floor, having mocktails, and just goofing around.

After we left the pub, we stopped at the neighborhood pizza place and ate dinner outside. It was so relaxing! (But someone asked me if I was an artist when they saw the chalk all over my pants. Ha ha, yeah right!)

The boys went to bed late that night, but we had a nice time together as a family, so who cares?

Saturday was George’s birthday, so I made hockey pucks biscuits and eggs for breakfast. (Note to self: Don’t use whole-wheat mix for biscuits. Life’s too short.) The boys went to Granny & Grandpa’s for the night, and I spent the next several hours shopping for and baking the cake you saw in a previous post. That thing was hardcore, man. But worth it. I also got some fancy steaks from a local meat market to grill. Mmmm.

So after we stuffed ourselves with steak and potatoes and salad, we headed to the pub, cake in hand.

Sunday, we recovered for most of the day, and I went to get the boys in the afternoon. It was still beautiful outside, so I took them to a park to run around for a while. Afterwards, we dined on a gourmet meal at the place Oliver calls “Old McDonald had a farm.”

And that was about it. Just a nice, relaxing weekend.

Happy birthday to my old man. I think he was going for the demented look here. Success!

(The cake, by the way, was awesome. You gotta make this.)

My wisdom

A tip of mine was run in the newest issue of Parents magazine. Pretty cool, eh?

A video in which my children demonstrate that they know more than I think. (Like, how does Oliver know what dog food looks like??)

Ta-da! Linus shows off his new haircut, courtesy of Moi. (That’s baby powder all over him, to get the hair off. Just like in a fancy salon, yes indeed!)

Fififippi Rahver

This morning, while walking with the girls, we decided to take a detour from our usual route to walk up on the levee and see what the river was looking like. Crazy, that’s what it’s looking like!

I know it’s hard if you don’t know what it looks like when the river is at a normal level, but let’s just say those trees are usually completely above-ground.

As is that one:

This is the ferry terminal. It’s hard to tell, but the covered ramp that goes to the boat is at an incline. It’s usually flat or slightly downhill.

Here’s a purty sunrise-ish picture:

Look! It’s St. Louis Cathedral!

Irrationally glad I don’t live on this street.

This is just freaky.
