Five years
You know, I kind of feel like a fraud for posting about Katrina. We didn’t lose much, our house was mostly fine, and our lives pretty much got back to normal pretty quickly. But it’s hard to avoid thinking about it, so I may as well post something.
Let’s see. Five years ago, I was up to my eyeballs in wedding planning. Our wedding was scheduled for November 12, 2005. I had my very first dress fitting scheduled for Saturday, August 27. I was insanely excited about it. I adored my wedding dress, and when George said I might need to reconsider driving an hour north to the dress shop when we should be getting ready to evacuate…well, I declined.
The thing is, on Friday night, no one thought much of Katrina. But there was a Saints game that night, so no one was watching the weather. No one except George (who hates football.) So he got up bright and early on Saturday to board up the windows, and I headed to my dress fitting. People were walking by the house as George nailed up the plywood, looking at him like he was nuts.
My plan was to go directly to my mom’s after that (an hour west of the dress fitting) for my sister’s friend’s baby shower. I loaded up the car with enough clothes for the weekend, and George was going to meet me at my mom’s later that day, after he was done with the house stuff.
By Saturday afternoon, people were starting to realize this was going to be a big deal. George barely managed to get Stinky (the cat) into her carrier, and thank god he did. We still thought we’d be home by Tuesday, so he considered just leaving her at the house with a ton of food and water.
To make a potentially very long story short, thirteen people, two dogs, a cat and a bird ended up staying at my mom’s house to ride out the storm. One friend didn’t know where her husband was. No one knew if their houses were flooded or destroyed. We ended up staying at my mom’s house for a few weeks, then we drove up to Washington DC to get away from it all for a while. Upon returning, George was all set to go back to our house, when Hurricane Rita hit, and the city was once again closed.
It was a frustrating time. Too many people in a house not meant to hold that many. Too many people in a city (Baton Rouge) not meant to hold that many. But we were so lucky. We did have to move our wedding from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, but no matter. It was beautiful and our friends and family were there. We went on an awesome honeymoon in England and Wales.
Anyway. Sorry for the nonsensical post.
Five years. Woo hoo.

Weekend recap
I am not very good at coming up with post titles. Duh, stating the obvious!
We had a really fun weekend, though, and I do want to write about it. Sadly, my trial of Lightroom expired, so my photos aren’t going to have the same “oomph” as they’ve had over the past few weeks. So sad. Very very sad.
Friday: Hung out at the pub for a while.
Saturday: Went to the zoo for a bit. Thank god for our membership. We can go, ride the carousel a few times, and then leave. We did go look at the gorilla, which was freaky. It was just sitting there, staring back at all the people looking at it. Weird. Anyway. The boys just wanted to say Goodnight to it.
I swear, Linus really wasn’t terrified on the carousel, but I had to post this because it makes me giggle.

After a quick trip to Pinkberry (picked up some yogurt to go, MAN that stuff is good!) we went home and put the boys down for a nap. The rest of the day was pretty quiet and uneventful.
Sunday: I took the boys to my friend Mandy’s house to play. She has a little girl who is a little older than the boys. Her name is Annabel, but Oliver kept referring to her as Tinkerbell. This kills me. We had fun at their house painting and playing with their toys.
Annabel and her little brother, Harry, riding in her Cozy Coupe.

Painting fun! (Mandy is very very very fearless.)

Harry joined in on the fun too. Hee hee!

After our playdate, it was time for a nap, so the rest of the day was pretty quiet.
And now it is Monday and here’s something exciting…I saw on Craigslist that they were looking for twins/triplets/brothers for a film being made here. So I sent off a picture of the boys and got a reply from the casting agency within a few hours. They have an audition (for what, I do not know) on Saturday. Eeep! It’s of course just for fun. (And fame and fortune.)

Things that make me happy
I am feeling a little blue today (due to some rather pricey dental work I was not expecting) so I thought I’d post a few things that cheer me up.
This Etsy shop. I covet pretty much each and every pair of earrings in it, but especially these:

I should buy them for myself one day. That would make me even happier.
Planning the boys’ third birthday party. I think I’ve settled on a theme (trains) and now for the fun part…designing and planning and wanting this cake pan (and Kristina to come to bake and decorate the cake!)
Taking pictures of the boys. Even though it’s hard to think of new ways to capture the same old-same old every day for my 365 project, I think my photography skills have improved (certainly I’ve learned a ton since January first) since then.

The faces in the light I stare at for hours on end at the dentist:

My new niece or nephew, due around the end of February:
