The big one

The support and kind words are just overwhelming. Thank you everyone for everything. But I feel bad – there are people who are so much worse off. Our home is okay, or so we hear (though I have to say – I am not looking forward to cleaning out the fridge when we do get to go back!) and our friends and family all made it out safely. (Well, there are a few we haven’t heard from yet. But I am very hopeful.)

It’s impossible to comprehend what’s happening. People have always talked about the Big One hitting New Orleans directly. But we didn’t really think it’d happen in our lifetime. And it’s playing out exactly like they said it would. Of course, I wouldn’t have predicted the lawlessness that would take over the city. I can’t believe there are people taking shots at helicoptors.

Polly finally heard from Colin. (Polly is a friend from our neighborhood who came to my mom’s house. Her husband works for the sheriff and had to stay behind.) I am so happy for her – he called this morning at about 6:30, and she hadn’t heard from him since Monday.

Two of our friends are leaving to go to Tucson today. I’m going to miss having them around. George’s parents and uncle and grandfather are moving into an apartment nearby on Saturday. And when Colin is finally able to get out of New Orleans to Baton Rouge, he and Polly will be leaving.

I want to leave. I want to go somewhere far away. Not forever. We’re going to come back to New Orleans, but that could be months away.

And of course the wedding…well, there’s no telling what’s going to happen. It’ll happen, just not the way we imagined. My wedding dress should be safe at the dress shop in Covington. If not, well, I’ll just have to get another one. I’m just amazingly unconcerned, for someone who has spent the last ten months obsessed with wedding planning. I’m actually kind of proud of myself.

I’m just glad we have our plane tickets to London and they’re nonrefundable. (I don’t want to know if they become refundable. We’re going on our honeymoon!)

Well, my sister was right. (You won’t catch me saying THAT very often.) Wedding Crashers was hilarious. George even loved it. He loved it so much he didn’t even mind that there were three little old ladies sitting behind us exclaiming at everything slightly shocking. That was entertaining in itself. I don’t think they were very shocked, either. I think they liked Vince Vaughn.

Went to pick out tuxes last night. Suddenly I can’t wait to see George in a tux. I don’t want to see him until the wedding in it. Is that traditional? I don’t know. But I want it to be a surprise, like him seeing me in my dress. However, don’t think this means I let him have a free hand in choosing tuxes. No way. He’d pick the Matrix-style tux if I left him alone. I know better than that.

This weekend should be fun. Have some fun plans.

Don’t want to say too much, but let’s just say next Thursday, you people are going to be clamoring for my autograph. Tee hee!

Fun trip!

What a fun weekend! Polly, Regan and I went to Dallas to visit my friends Mar and Ket. Yes, those are their real names. To me.

We left on Friday afternoon and got to Mar’s house at around, oh, 1 am. Even though we genuinely, naively thought we’d be there by 11. Of course, traffic was horrific leaving New Orleans, so it wasn’t really our fault.

Anyway, so we get to Mar’s incredible house (it’s a gorgeous house on its own, but really, it’s her decorating sense that makes the house. Gorgeous. Her dining room table is to die for. Oh man. And her bedroom? It’s about the size of my house. Approximately.

So we go to sleep and on Saturday morning, we go to meet Kettie and her friend Brittany for brunch. Mmm. Brunch. I had pan-crepes. Those wacky Dallas restaurants, mixing pancakes with crepes! Delish. (Why they just couldn’t call them crepes is beyond me, but what do I know?)

After pan-crepes and bacon, we went to DSW. I got a pair of $80, 4″ heels for $20. Gotta love it. Not the most practical shoes, but who cares, for $20? And then onto Sam Moon, which is indescribable. A large jewelry/purse/belt/scarf store teeming with women because of the low prices. Is that a good description? No. Anyway, I got some earrings (including some faux diamond ones that match my necklace perfectly) and a shawl.

On to a fancy mall after that, where I fruitlessly searched for a “foundation garment” for the wedding. If you don’t know what it is, don’t ask. You don’t want to know. Also a stop in Sephora where we all got our eyes made up and where Kettie and Polly got suckered into buying $22 lotion. But it did make their hands feel very very soft. Okay, kidding about the suckered part, if you’re reading this, Polly and Kettie! I bought the best eyeshadow brush ever and an eyelash curler. Fascinating, eh?

So then we left the mall and visited Kettie’s house, dog, and husband. All very cute. Looked at her wedding pictures. Kettie was a beautiful bride, but the best part is her description of her hairdo. “Five minutes before walking down the aisle, I shoved it into a ponytail.” Sigh. To be so low-maintenance. Not me.

Went to dinner after that, and met up with everyone’s-friend Martha and a guy we went to high school with. Drank margaritas and ate too much food. Went back to Mar’s house and drank some wine, and then went to sleep. And then came home on Sunday.

So really we only had one day in Dallas, but it was lots of fun. I think next time I’ll fly.

Fun weekend. Worked on the garden (am trying to kill grass. We have very hardy grass that will. not. die.) and then went to pick up George’s wedding band (used to belong to my dad, happily, they were able to preserve the engraving on it, after it was resized. Let me say now that my dad, all 6′ of him, had smaller fingers than George. Weird.) and then we went to the flea market (got some vintage earrings to decorate my shoes). Stopped for a Sonic Blast (hmm, why am I not losing weight?) on the way, and after the flea market went to the mall to get my necklace inspected. (My other bling that must be inspected twice a year.) Then we went to a grocery store where I bought some rum that I am now inebriated from. Can you believe I can spell inebriated after drinking approximately half a bottle of it? Ha ha. Okay, maybe not a full half of it. But close. Now I must drunk dial Kristina’s boyfriend and tell him to marry her. I think it’s only fair.

June 7, 2005

Hmm. Now that the excitement of the party and my trip to Durham are over, I have not much to say. Let me think…

Well, actually, Saturday was sort of exciting. After going to another engagement party, we went to a jewelry store to find out if George would be able to wear my dad’s ring as his wedding band. The store was so awesome – the jeweler first said he could stretch it out, without messing up the engraving inside. As long as my dad had never had it resized, that is. Turns out, he had. So while they were stretching it, it popped. So now they’re going to add a little gold to fix it, and then send it out to fix the engraving that got cut in half. No biggie, and they’re only charging me $18! Eighteen dollars! What a bargain! Thanks, Dad!

(One may say it is unfair that George had to buy not one, but two diamond rings for me, and I only have to pay $18. But I say, I have to wear a dress that costs at least ten times more than he will pay for a rented tux. Not to mention every other wedding cost. So there.)

Tonight we’re going on a date. George says I get to pick the restaurant. Must be something light since tomorrow morning will be my first weigh in in two weeks, and after a week of eating
off plan. I’m thinking somewhere with raw oysters. Mmmm….

Ack!

Agggh!

I really wish I could write a nice long post about the incredible, amazing, wonderful day I had on Saturday, but unfortunately, I’m in North Carolina at a work conference and I have no time. Plus, I’m working on a laptop without a mouse, which drives me insane. But I promise I will post a lot, lot, lot when I get back.

All I can say is, THANK YOU everyone who was there. And everyone who wanted to be there. It was just the most amazing party. And YES, I WAS SURPRISED!! (Why does no one believe me? Tee hee!)

Here is a link to some pictures. Tee hee, fun fun fun!

(FYI, to those who don’t know…my friends and family threw us a surprise engagement party at the pub on Saturday. Actually, it was only a surprise to me, not George. But it was incredible.)

November 23, 2004

Ugh. Am tired. Did not sleep last night. Tossed and turned. Is this what I have to look forward to for the next year? My mind was racing. Reception hall…food…dresses…are we going to get yelled at by the church for living together…ugh. I have a feeling I will be taking a lot of Benadryl and Tylenol PM for the forseeable future. Just can’t turn my mind off. Okay, I will try to not get hooked on non-prescription drugs.

On the bright side, I’m pretty sure we have the reception taken care of. We went and visited the hotel in question, it’s nice (if a tad anonymous, but we will make it pretty) and the food looks incredible. No, I haven’t tasted it, but I’ve heard good things about them. But then this morning I heard something bad that may or may not have been true, so I’m a little nervous. But we haven’t signed anything yet. So we’ll see.

I’ll just be glad to have a few days off this week. Must…relax and enjoy engagement. Stop stressing!

Oops. I forgot to fix that link to the church picture. Have to do that at home.

So I went to Baton Rouge this weekend, saw Kettie and Mark and Teresa and Ann. It was very fun. And I tried on dresses (and found one I love that my mom wasn’t thrilled with but then saw a picture of a similar one that we both love, but it won’t be in at the bridal store until early next year for me to try on but that’s okay.)

Saturday night I drank waaaaay too much red wine and paid for it yesterday. We went to Nick and Annie’s for dinner (Annie made homemade bread and this spinach-roasted vegetable-phyllo dough layered casserole type thingy that was insanely delicious) and that’s where the wine massacre started. Then we went to the pub
and I hung out with Terry and continued killing the grapes. My teeth were an oh-so-lovely shade of gray by the end of the night. Ah well, it was fun at least.

I am trying to get an appointment to go look at a hotel this afternoon after work. It looks like a good bet for a reception site. To be honest, I’m not all that concerned about where it is or anything. I just want to have some yummy food, lots of chocolate, and my friends and family there.
