Back

My site was down off and on all weekend, but I moved hosts from Dreamhost to Bluehost, and after a little tweaking, all should be fine now.

I know this is going to sound like in tooting my own company’s horn, but VaultPress made this whole process immensely easier and less stressful. I just restored a backup from my site to the new host, and voila! There it was! No exporting and importing and themes and plugins and making sure all of my custom CSS was moved. It just…worked. If you have a self-hosted WordPress site, I highly recommend you get VaultPress for it. No, I don’t get a bonus for saying that. Ha ha! I have been wanting to leave Dreamhost for many years because of outages and slowness, but I was dreading the process. No need for that!

Anyway, I’m excited because now my site should load faster now, and things like my site going down right after my boss re-tweets a link to one of my posts to his 68k followers won’t happen again. (It wasn’t because of traffic, it was just a sad coincidence.) (And here’s the post for anyone who couldn’t see it on Saturday.)

Super tough job I have

It may not be totally obvious from the photos I’ve already posted, but my trip to Playa del Carmen was for work. We were there to learn what tools other Happiness Engineers use while working, and developed resources for our colleagues to learn more about those tools. But it’s not like sitting around laptops makes for scintillating photos. Nevertheless, I made a video recapping our week.

We had a nice seafood dinner on our last night, then fancy cocktails at some fancy cocktail place. Great end to a great trip, which I will recap fully soon. Before I forget everything.

Wednesday night was a little too much fun. A tour of some breweries via a giant bike, and then doughnuts. I mean, we cycled between breweries, so the doughnuts were necessary nourishment. Or something.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day indeed! My free drinks on Southwest basically made up for the fact that my luggage was a little delayed.

How I got my new job

My fellow Happiness Engineer Wendy wrote this awesome post about the process we go through to get jobs at Automattic. It’s a fascinating yet grueling process, and reading this post makes me so glad it’s over. In a good way, of course.

It’s Time to Get All Real Up in Here About Automattic Trials, Y’all

During Trial, you might feel like you have developed bi-polar disorder. You’ll have moments of euphoria and a “I totally have this thing handled” feeling followed by moments of self-doubt, wondering why the hell we gave you access to millions of users’ sites since you’re clearly a hopeless ninny.

What I do.

(Written by my friend Zandy, who recommended I apply for my job back in August, and to whom I owe a huge debt of gratitude.)

Burrito Friday is a thing at Automattic, and this is purported to be one of the best burrito places in San Francisco. I don’t know about that, but my carne asada burrito was damn good.

I had such a great birthday today. Of course I missed my family, but well…it’s hard to beat a gorgeous day in San Francisco with kind and generous new coworkers who arrange a homemade birthday cake for you in your favorite flavors (that’s yellow cake with chocolate frosting.)

Just looking at this picture makes me happy.
