My coloring genius!

Oh, I totally forgot to post about this!

When I went to get the boys Friday afternoon, their teacher and the director were all excited about the picture Oliver colored that day. The words “exceptional” and “remarkable” were bandied about. (And for once, it wasn’t “they are exceptional whiners”.) Look, I don’t know when kids are supposed to color in the lines. This is how I expect 3 year olds to color pictures:

Adorable, right? I love Linus’s exuberance and Miles’s, uh, creativity. But check out Oliver’s picture…

That’s kinda crazy, huh? I really would have expected it more from Miles, who I’ve always considered the most “artistic”. But I also think this has more to do with Oliver’s kind of, well, fastidious nature. My little neat freak! Just like his Uncle Evan, who used to vacuum my room for me.

As a working illustrator, I’m paranoid I’m going to shove “art” down our boys’ throat when the time comes. Just because I do it for a living doesn’t mean my offspring will care anything about it. On the other hand, maybe they’ll need a nudge from Dad to unlock some incredible potential or something.

In general, I always tend to assume our children are going to be completely uninterested in anything I care about. My wife, on the other hand, is positive they’re going to be just like her.

Needless to say, I can see myself making a really big deal out of a nicely colored picture if and when that day comes. In fact, I’ll probably scare them with enthusiasm.

Wow! That’s amazing! I feel much better about James’ coloring skills. He seems to have the same style as Miles. Oliver is crazy talented!!
