TGI friggin M

Even though I technically went back to work on Thursday (but then had to take Friday off), today it finally feels like life is getting back to normal. School started again today! Hooray! Back to a normal schedule! I just had two weeks of intense, um, quality time with my children and I think we’re all just a little sick of each other. The eight hours of separation each day will do us all good, I think.

The weather was pretty yucky on Saturday and Sunday, so things were pretty quiet. We did, however, go to a birthday party on Saturday. It was for my sweet birthday buddy, Ann Frances, and her cousin (whose birthday was on Saturday). I took some photos of them beforehand. Such sweet babies and pretty mamas!

The party was at Mardi Gras World, which made for some fun photo ops, but the ceiling inside was black, which meant my flash got completely absorbed by it, and it was impossible to take decent photos inside. Sad.

The kids decorated masks:

There was this awesome mural of the city made of Mardi Gras beads.

So that was fun. The boys were being pretty crabby, and Oliver was in desperate need of some one-on-one time, so after the party I took him to the grocery store. I can’t explain how wonderful it is to spend time with them alone. I really wish I could do it more.

The five year well visit

Took the boys to their five year well visit on Friday, I think the first well visit all by myself. Mostly because it was the first well visit that didn’t involve ANY shots. Hooray!

The boys were asking what was going to happen, and before we got to the office, I joked that the doctor was going to ask if they were eating their vegetables. “You’re just kidding?” they asked, because they knew they weren’t going to have a good answer to that question.

First things first…they were weighed and measured.

Miles getting height measured

Linus: 42 lbs (50th); 43.9″ tall (50-75th)
Oliver: 40.5 lbs (50th); 44″ tall (50-75th)
Miles: 42.1 lbs (50-75th); 44.2″ tall (75th)

Compared to one year ago:
Linus: 36.2 lbs (50th); 40.8? tall (50-75th)
Oliver: 36.3 lbs (50th); 41.6? tall (50-75th)
Miles: 37.4 lbs (50-75th); 41.2? tall (50-75th)

Yet again, our former peanut is now the biggest. I don’t think he looks any bigger, but then again, we’re only talking about a pound and a half. And Linus’s cheeks make him look bigger to me.

Anyway, after the measuring, they had their blood pressure taken. This year, they were so mature about it, and didn’t freak out and cry like they did last year. My brave little men!

No biggie, mom!

And then we spent a few minutes with the doctor. I sat there trying to think of something to ask, but honestly, they’ve been so healthy, I couldn’t really think of anything. They had their hearts and lungs listened to, their ears, noses, throats, etc, checked, and were pronounced perfect. I did have to laugh when the doctor asked them what their favorite vegetable was. Guess I wasn’t joking after all! They all hemmed and hawed, and Miles finally blurted out, “I like carrots!” which is news to me. Oliver and Linus assured her they like fruit (which is a joke, they’ll only eat apples) so she advised me to not stress about it and give them a multivitamin. The latter is definitely easier than the former, but I’ll try.

And that was it! They got their Transformers stickers and we were on our way.

Until next year…

Looking forward

So I feel kind of weird, not having to take a picture every day to post. So I need to figure out new things to post about. Like, maybe some goals I might have for the new year? (Not resolutions. Those are just one-way tickets to disappointment.)  I need to get into the habit of posting the little funny things the boys do here, not on Facebook, where I feel like they vanish into the ether (though of course, as we’re frequently reminded, everything online is permanent. Whatever.)

For instance, the boys are now into Transformers in a big way. Linus calls his favorite “Awesomest Prime”. I don’t have the heart to correct him.

And I want to take pictures because I want to, not because I feel compelled to. You can tell there were some days when I was truly desperate. (I’m still going to continue with the monthly photos of the boys, though, which reminds me, tomorrow is the fourth. Mustn’t forget!)

I kind of, on a whim, set a goal of running 500 miles this year. Well, that’s running/walking because I don’t know how to just count the miles I run, since I do both, you know? So I’m not counting if I only walk, but if I run most of it, I’ll count it. I do most of my running on a treadmill – does anyone know of a good app (for the iPhone) that will help me keep track of my progress? I use MapMyRun now, but that’s more for outside running than treadmill running.

I also could use the blog to hold myself more accountable with eating. I used to blog a lot about weight loss, and I think it helped a lot. Could get somewhat boring, though. Anyway, I’m still attempting to eat low-carb, since that works for me. I hit my lowest weight in July, and since then have gained back about nine of the 40 pounds I lost. So I need to get that off and more. At least by May, when I have my twentieth high school reunion.

Gaah! Am I getting old? I’ll be 38 next week. It’s all relative. Let’s say no. I’ll always be younger than my siblings, at least. Ha!

Okay, well, this post was kind of all over the place. Any suggestions for blog topics are always welcome.

(Cannot post with out a photo. Just can’t do it.)

Bigger and better

The boys are outgrowing their toddler beds, so we’re moving on to bigger and better things. Our friend Chris is building their bunk beds (3 up!) and they should be ready soon. In the meantime, he and George lined the walls with plywood to strengthen them, since the beds will be built in.

I will be painting that wood, and the rest of the bunk beds, a dark glossy gray.

So for now, the boys will be sleeping in the playroom, which is their old nursery. It all comes full circle.

My favorites of 2012

Now that I’ve finished yet another 365/6 project, I want to revisit my favorite photos of 2012. I don’t plan on doing this project again, I just hope to blog with words more than I have for the past three years. We shall see…

Anyway, not all of these are of my kids, not all were taken with my DSLR, and not all were even taken by me. But for one reason or another, I love these photos.

From the newborn shoot of my sweet birthday buddy, Ann Frances. She made a lot of appearances on my blog this year, along with her sister. I absolutely adore this sweet girl, and I love this picture of her with her daddy.

And this one is another baby-with-daddy photo I love. This baby, August, is the boys’ birthday buddy. I suppose he and Ann Frances are meant to be.

Just a sweet picture of Linus.

The boys were trying on their outfits for my friend’s wedding. I think this is by far my favorite outfit I’ve ever put on them. So adorable. This was also during the short-lived “different haircut” phase.

Here’s one I took with my old point-and-shoot, during swimming lessons this summer. You don’t think I’d bring my DSLR in the pool, do you?

Run!
Running away from Mommy while she was trying to take their monthly photo. It doesn’t get easier with time, that’s for sure.

Fun in the sand
So many pictures I love from our beach trip this summer. What a fantastic trip. The boys still ask when we’re going back.

Obviously I didn’t take this one, but I did set it up. Kiki was the photographer here. Just one of the rare photos of me and the boys.

08/26/12
My brother and niece came to visit for a few days this summer. I was so glad the boys got to spend time with Uncle Evan and Ellie, and am even more grateful they all cooperated for this photo. Yes, I’m including my brother in “they”.

The light here is just perfect. Love it. And it’s at my favorite po-boy restaurant, and it was when Kiki and Mike were visiting. So a lot of nice memories here. Yes, a delicious po-boy counts as a memory.

10/27/12
Another one obviously not taken by me. George took this with his phone, and it’s more about what it represents. He and the boys got to see me cross the finish line of a half-marathon I finished in record time. It was just such a fantastic moment for me. They were more interested in the Spiderman who finished before me, but what can ya do?

This was the photo I used one one of our holiday cards, and I will freely confess that it’s a composite. I had to switch out Oliver (on the right) from another shot. They were just SO over having their picture taken by this point. It was really hot, and they were just done. But I love the way it came out, and I love the setting. That’s a mural my cousin Clark (below) painted on the side of a building in downtown Baton Rouge.

Love this photo of my cousin Clark and his son Asa at Thanksgiving. My aunt’s house has so many gorgeous spots for photos, and I had lots of willing subjects. I’m pretty sure my cousin was cursing me at this point for making him continue to swing so I could get a good shot.

We took the boys for a walk on the levee, right at the time of day when the light is so golden and perfect, and I got a rare shot of George and his boys. Love.

There’s so much I love about this. We went to the zoo and the kids were climbing this tree when I pushed Mary Catherine out of the way so I could take this (nice of me, she’s 7 months pregnant.) I love the look on Millie’s face. You can read it so many ways, but only I have to know she really just wanted someone to get her down.

12/31/12

Mary Catherine and I took the kids to the zoo today for Zoo Year’s Eve, and I’m pretty sure this is my favorite picture of the whole year.

Oh, and this marks the END of three years solid of 365/6 projects. That’s 1096 days in a row of taking at least a picture a day. And I need a break. Whew.

12/29/12

Post long-overdue haircut. They were extremely well-behaved and the price wasn’t too bad, so I’m thinking we’ll be going back to this salon a lot in the future!

Oliver and Emily having a little meal. Okay, not really. Just pretending to, at the children’s museum.
