Accountability and public speaking and green hair and other things

It’s been way too long since I’ve posted a real post. The kind with words and stuff. I feel pretty bad about just posting a bunch of pics about Austin, when I have lots of great memories that I really should be writing down. Let’s just hope the pictures help me remember them later. Or maybe I’ll end up editing that post with more details. We’ll see.

I think the best way for me to organize my thoughts is with bullets, since this’ll be all over the place.

I’ve been thinking for a long time about doing some kind of bootcamp fitness program, but I’ve been unable to find one that was at the appropriate times, etc. I was talking to someone a few weeks ago and she mentioned she was going to Orange Theory Fitness so I looked into it and ended up going to a class yesterday.

It was tough, I gotta say. It’s funny, you think “I can run a few miles at a time, and I can do half marathons without dying, so I must be in some kind of shape” and then you do a class like this and

noooope.gif

It’s high intensity interval training, and there are treadmills and rowing machines and weights and floor exercises and wow, when I got off the rowing machines after a few minutes my legs were like jelly.

So I signed up to go as much as humanly possible and try to get really fit over the next two months (and beyond) because in two months, this is happening…
Say hello to our next group of #WCEU speakers!

Yes, my coworker Erica and I are giving a talk at WordCamp Europe in front of, oh, I don’t know, more than the 20 people I spoke to at WordCamp Dayton. At least I can hide behind Erica, except she is tiny.

Anyway, my only point is that I want to feel good about myself before getting on a stage in front of more than 20 people.

In non-me related things, I continued to allow my children to really express themselves through their hair. I mean, it’s not hurting anyone. It’s temporary (ish, I mean, I did have to bleach their hair to get it this vibrant, but hair does grow) and if you could have seen how happy Linus was after we made his green, well, any doubts would have been wiped away.

Miles wanted to be in the picture too. He of course also now wants to dye his hair, but I pointed out that his acting career might suffer if he does. So we’re leaving it as is for now. Anyway, if I have to end up dying Linus and Oliver’s back, I’ll need a reference for the original color. Ha!

I had a really fun weekend with the boys, not just dying their hair. We saw Jungle Book (really good) and watched a bunch of baking shows on Netflix. MilesCupcake Wars in particular inspired us to whip up a batch of homemade vanilla cupcakes and vanilla buttercream frosting. I even scraped seeds out of vanilla bean pods, that’s how serious we were. They were deeeelish, in spite of the fact that I apparently left a box of powdered sugar at the grocery store after paying for it, so our frosting was more butter than anything. Nothin’ wrong with that

Miles approves of my frosting recipe.

Austin in April

I got back the other day from a week-long work trip to Austin with one of the two teams I work on. It was a great week of bonding (we have a lot of new Automatticians on the team that I hadn’t met yet) and eating. I have decided that if it came down to food, I’d much rather live in Austin than New Orleans.

The food:

The work:

The fun:

Go team! (Thank you selfie stick)

More NYC pics

Want to post these before too much time passes.

Lots of pictures from places we worked, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, a visit to the 9/11 memorial, and lots of group pics because because. Also Daryl.

A couple more days in New York!

IMG_8584.jpg

Saturday was spent working until dinnertime, when we headed to a Brazilian place for appetizers and then this amazing pizza place for the rest.

IMG_0962.jpg

Sunday started with brunch at a meatball restaurant (why not?) followed by a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and a visit to the 9/11 memorial.

Monday was the last day of the meetup, sad.

(Lots more NYC pics to come in a separate post.)

In New York for a meetup!

IMG_8517.JPG

My amazing teammates from Happiness Hiring. We went to a meetup with support people in the area, and had some great conversations and beer.

We went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art after working today, and when I saw this sign, I got a bit antsy. I really want it to be WordPlay.

A story of support

One of the things about working for a company that puts such a huge value on great support is that you really notice when other companies do poorly at it. Well, maybe that’s the wrong way to word it. Everyone notices when they get shitty support. But now I pity the people who work for those companies.

This saga started right after we got back from the cruise, and I used the family photos we took to create a Christmas card at Minted. I must’ve looked at a zillion designs before I settled on one.

Minted has gorgeous designs, it can’t be denied, but their user interface is a pain in my ass. I couldn’t decide which card to get, so I would pick one, personalize it, and then put it in the shopping cart. And then change my mind.

You have to put in all of your info every time you do this. So every time I decided on a card, I had to put in our address on the back (I was looking at the postcards) and our last name in this little block under the photo.

(Other companies save that info and populate the personalized spaces automatically so you don’t have to type it in every time.)

When I got the cards, I was dismayed to discover that our cards were ostensibly from The Chandlers. I immediately contacted Minted via live chat.

Yes, technically it was my fault when I finally settled on a design and neglected to change our name from The Chandlers. I freely admit this and I said as much to the agent.

The operator I got was obviously not empowered to engineer my happiness because he offered to reprint them for $37. Which was more than half of what I paid initially. I said no thanks and took to Twitter.

Twitter got me better results, though it took some time. Eventually, someone else (a supervisor?) was able to get the cards corrected and reprinted. It took a week, but I finally got the reprints yesterday.

Except the cards I got were for the R family in Midlothian, Virginia. They are a lovely family. Two cherubic blond children and their attractive parents. I wondered if their photos were also taken on a cruise (they were posed on the kind of glam staircase that you see on a cruise ship) but that would just be too much of a coincidence.

I couldn’t believe I waited this long for someone else’s cards. I hit up Twitter again, and ended up with a refund because at this point, I just wanted my money back.

That would be the end of the story, but the best part is that when I went to Facebook to look up the R family to see if I could maybe send them their cards, they had already messaged me! Indeed, they have my cards, and we’re going to mail them to each other. So there is a happy ending to this story after all.

You know, it’s not about the cards. It’s not about the fact that Minted has a crappy UI. It’s that I’m now even happier to work for a company that trusts us to do whatever we can to make a user happy. If that had been a Happiness Engineer on that very first live chat, a reprint would have been ordered immediately and that would have been that.

I’m so glad I work for a company where every Happiness Engineer has the same power to make our users happy. There are no supervisors, no escalating of tickets.

So the moral of this story is, double check your last name and work for Automattic.

2 years at Automattic!

Okay, I know I posted back in September that I’d been here for two years, but that was counting my trial. Today was the day I started as a full-time Happiness Engineer in 2013. It’s been an amazing time, with so many fantastic memories! Here are a few…

Yeah, that’s a lot of memories for two years. Can’t wait to make so many more! (And yes, we’re hiring.)

Just life

I always said you shouldn’t wait for something big to happen to write a blog post, so here I am, writing a blog post about nothing much at all.

Let’s see.

Last night, Miles and I went for our dinner. He got a haircut. He looks cute.

IMG_5843

And then at 5am, presumably unrelated to the haircut, he got a nosebleed. Poor bunny was hysterical. I had no idea what to do, since we’ve never dealt with a nosebleed before. But I think we’re more prepared if it happens again.

Here’s a cute picture of one of my teams at work. Well, most of the team. The ladiezzzz.

IMG_5796

I didn’t realize at the time just how short they all are. Hee!

This weekend is a half marathon. Why did I sign up for this? Peer pressure! Ah well. I did a ten mile training run last weekend (it was ugly and on the treadmill) so I suppose I’ll be able to do this. Meh. It’s not at all cool here so that really sucks.

What would suck more is if it rains that night like it’s supposed to and we can’t trick or treat. I need my Smarties fix, man! I mean, the boys would be so disappointed!

We at least got to go to Ghost in the Oaks at City Park last weekend. I took selfies on a ride because it’s funny.

IMG_5789

The weekend after this one is my friend Kristie’s wedding. We’ve been friends 4eva. Since 7th grade. So that’s…a really long time. Don’t make me say the number here. Anyway, I ordered a sparkly dress from Rent the Runway. I am excited about that.

I think that’s about it. Hmm.

Getting inked

My very talented colleague Michelle (I mean, just check out her blog, it is the best) took some behind-the-scenes photos of my tattoo experience last week. Pretty cool!
