Multiples and eating

Well, who knew? Turns out there is a family history of multiples in our family. Two sets, in fact. My mom’s side of the family is so huge it’s hard to keep track of.

So an exciting thing about being pregnant with triplets is that I’m supposed to eat a LOT of food. A LOT of calories. It’s a truly mind-boggling number, particularly for someone who has spent her entire life attempting (but not always succeeding) to count calories and keep the number low.

The only problem is, not all food sounds appealing to me right now. And I can’t say until I’m hungry if I’ll be in the mood for anything in particular. But I am intrigued by the promise of smoothies and Wendy’s Frosties. And Ben and Jerry’s. For some reason, sweet things always sound appealing. Figures.

Ah well, I shall sacrifice for the three little piggies so they become nice and chubby and healthy. Even if it means full fat ice cream. Heh.

Oh.. and I wanted sweets ALL the time.. it’s awesome! Even the guys at work got with the program.. until my doctor told me to cut it out or the baby would be too big.. I think she may have been right! (Sweets means it’s a girl.. or three in your case)

Get french fries and dip them in a BIGGIE Frosty! And, does this mean you can guiltlessly eat all the bread you want? Brownies! Cakes! Cookies! Squeals!

Don’t worry Jen – there is plenty of love to go around for each of these gaggle of girls! (Why I keep thinking they’re all girls – don’t know…?…)We can’t wait to meet Emily – hopefully Elle won’t say “wake up baby!” too much! We’ll be there in just 2 weeks!Jennifer

Holy crap for Ren too. What’s going on with all my lady friends getting knocked up? Wait … don’t answer that. I guess it’s about time for Deb and I to have another. Don’t hold your breath. We just got a new dog a while back.Deb said it’s completely rad* that P is having a trey.*Deb would never use that word. Not in a million years.

if you’re worried about the figures coming from the Barbara Luke Book (when you’re expecting twins, triplets, or quads), don’t stress about it just yet. Virtually every doctor I’ve talked to has said that her figures for calorie intake and weight gain are simply unrealistic and that you have to remember that every woman’s body is different and has different needs. I’ve lost 17 pounds in my triplet pregnancy so far, but the babies are growing and thriving and completely on-target growth-wise and my doctors are absolutely unconcerned. When it comes down to it, the babies are parasites and they’re going to get everything they need from you regardless of your intake, so you have to be careful to be taking care of your needs more than anything. Eat when you’re hungry, make healthy choices when you can, don’t deprive yourself when you want treats, and don’t diet. Beyond that, follow your doctor’s advice. And get yourself a perinatologist. Your regular OB will not suffice, no matter how much you love him or her. Honest.
