Summertime in New Orleans. Traditionally a time for frozen daiquiris, icy beer, pints of cider and Pimm’s Cups. Anything sweet and cool and refreshing will do.
However…this summer is my Dukan summer. My low-carb summer. My summer with no alcohol. But let’s be realistic. So let’s go for alcohol with less sugar (sorry daiquiris!)
And that’s where Michelob ULTRA Light Cider comes in.
I love cider, especially in the summer. It reminds me of living in London. But regular cider is so sweet. After doing without sugar for so long, it’s practically like syrup. But the Michelob ULTRA Light Cider is light. And crisp. Less sugary-sweet. I don’t know how they do it, but it’s quite refreshing. And it has a lot fewer calories than regular cider – 120 versus 180. (And when you’re having, um, shall we say, more than one, those calories add up!)
I got a six-pack one warm late spring Saturday when the boys and I were staying at my mom’s house. They have this back patio that is perfect in the early evening – shady, comfy reclining chairs, and it overlooks big yard for the boys to run around in while I relax. So I cracked open the Michelob ULTRA Light Cider…
and my mom stole it. Dang!
Fortunately, there were five more in the pack. Heh.
Another bonus about this cider is that it’s gluten-free. So many people out there (including my mother-in-law) cannot have any gluten at all, which limits their choices for refreshing beverages. Now I know what to bring next time I drop the boys off at Granny and Grandpa’s house! That should make three four year olds easier to deal with, don’t you think?
It’s funny that cider is generally considered a fall and winter beverage. Makes sense, I guess. People pick apples in the fall (or so I’ve heard – none of that down South) and so apparently drink their cider in the cooler months as well. But let me assure you, if you’re a northerner who thinks cider is only appropriate in the colder half of the year. Michelob ULTRA Light Cider is perfect for these hot, sticky summer days.
