One fateful morning

Even though it’s been nearly two years since the fateful day, I don’t think I ever posted on my blog the detailed story of how we found out we were having triplets. It’s still pretty vivid in my mind, after all this time, so I think I will post it now. Just so I have it written. Since this is as close as the boys will ever get to a baby book. Heh.

It was June 6, 2007. A Wednesday. I was 7 weeks and 3 days pregnant.

I’d already had an appointment with my OB three weeks prior, when I was just four and a half weeks pregnant. At that appointment, I just talked to the doctor, he did an exam, and I had some blood tests done. It was confirmed I was indeed pregnant, but that was it. No ultrasounds or anything (not that there would have been anything to see at that point.)

So that first ultrasound. My OB did ultrasounds on all of his pregnant patients at around seven weeks to rule out ectopic pregnancies. It was a morning appointment. George came with me. I was so nervous, because I hadn’t had any morning sickness yet. I didn’t feel pregnant at all. We’d just gotten back from California, and the memory of the noodles we’d eaten at a restaurant in Chinatown made me kind of queasy, but that’s it. We went through the drive-through of a McDonald’s on the way there so I could get something to drink and George could get a bite to eat. I was far too nervous to eat. I remember thinking as we sat in the drive-through line, “boy, I hope it’s not twins.”

We got to the doctor’s office and signed in at the ultrasonographer’s office. I was nervous. So nervous. It wasn’t a long wait, but it might as well have been hours. Finally, I am called back. George had to wait in the waiting room during the ultrasound, but he would be allowed to come back after the tech had taken all measurements and such.

I’d heard you were supposed to have a full bladder for this early of an ultrasound but fortunately, the technician said I wouldn’t need to, so she let me use the bathroom before we got started. Soon enough, I was up on the table, and the ultrasound began.

I couldn’t see the screen, and the technician was quiet. Very quiet. Every so often she’d ask me to hold my breath while she clicked things on her keyboard and moved the wand around. A few minutes in, she asked, “have you had any morning sickness?”

I replied, “no,” and assumed the worst. Why would you ask such a thing? Clearly, it was because there was no baby in there. I stared at the ceiling tiles and just willed her to tell me already. Just give me the bad news. I was prepared. Just stop torturing me. But she continued to click and scan and have me hold very still.

After an eternity, she asked me to go get George so he could take a look. At this point, I was somewhat relieved. She didn’t seem to have terrible news for us, and she wouldn’t ask George to take a look if there was nothing good to see, right? So I went and got him from the waiting room.

{{At this point, my memory is somewhat foggy. You can understand, right? Shock does that to you.}}

We walk in, and as I go to sit back on the table, she says something that will change our lives forever.

“You’re having triplets.”

I just remember at that point, completely withdrawing into myself. The entire world shrinking to the size of a pea, I don’t know, was I blacking out? Utter and complete shock. I don’t know. I laid back on the table and grabbed George’s hand. He was silent. He was sitting. I don’t remember if he said anything. The first things that ran through my head were terror and disappointment. I was scared. I wasn’t supposed to have multiples! I wanted a natural childbirth, a fun stroller, cloth diapers, breastfeeding. I could see all of these expectations of parenthood slipping away.

High-risk pregnancy. Bedrest. Miscarriage. Premature babies. It was scary. I was not excited. I think I cried a little. Or I wanted to.

Then the tech asked us if we wanted a recording of the ultrasound. I said yes, of course. George looked through his wallet for ten dollars. He gave it to her and she put a DVD into the machine to record the rest of the scan.

And you can watch that part for yourself…

After the scan was done, we had to go upstairs to my OB’s office to talk to him. We sat in the waiting area and I could see nurses peeking into the room, staring at us and whispering to each other. Oh yes, the freak show had begun.

We went into his office, and he said, “oh yes, I thought your uterus felt big at your last appointment.” Ha ha!

But then we talked about the dangers. Possible complications. “Don’t tell anyone it’s triplets until you hit twelve weeks.” And then there was, “you were built for a triplet pregnancy!” And George’s favorite, “Go. Have a drink. Both of you. I don’t normally tell my patients this, but Pam, have a glass of wine. Let it sink in.” In a daze, we left the office and got into my car.

“We’re going to need a minivan.”

We headed to the pub. It wasn’t even noon, but our friend James, the owner, let us in and served us our drinks. Of course we told him. I called my mom. She laughed. I called my friends. Most of them didn’t believe me. I couldn’t blame them, I barely believed it myself. I went back to work and informed my coworkers. It was a surreal day.

And two days shy of six months later, the boys were born. 🙂

16 months old

Another month…going by so quickly. Honestly, this one went by in a flash. Usually, at about a week before they turn “x months old”, I start saying they’re “almost x months old” when people ask. But this time, I was kind of surprised that it was here already. Time is speeding up…

They just keep…growing! And learning!

Some new things:

– Walking is getting much better. I predict Linus will be the first to run.
– When you ask what an elephant says, they put their arm up, next to their ear, like an elephant’s trunk.
– They can also “sssss” like a snake, but they seem to have no clue what cats or dogs or cows say. 😛
– Eating is going okay. Blueberries are their newest most favorite food ever, and even crackers aren’t a surefire hit anymore. But they’re doing okay. I just have to keep trying new things.
– One nap a day now. Booooo hoooo!
– Still love love love love love books. Almost would rather read books (I mean, make US read books) than play with toys.
– Though Oliver does love balls. He kicks and throws them and loves for us to dribble them.
– Last month, I turned them forward-facing. I wish I could have rear-faced them longer, and I know I could go back, but I think they’d be mad. I turned them FF because of some practical reasons, and the mommy guilt has kicked in. But oh my god, it’s so much easier to get a kid in the third row when they’re forward-facing.
– Linus has been throwing full-on temper tantrums. It’s kind of funny, but I know it won’t be for long. I think it’s time to investigate some books on toddler discipline. I’ve heard good things (from other triplet moms) about Love & Logic and 1,2,3 Magic. We’ll see.

In other news, we had our neighborhood garage sale on Friday. I got burned to a crisp (despite putting on sunscreen) but on the bright side, I made enough money for a Wii! And a Wii Fit! I got the Wii on Saturday and the Wii Fit should be arriving tomorrow. I can’t wait! I’ve already been playing Super Mario Brothers (yes, the old 1985 version – we downloaded it) and I don’t think I’ll need any other games. I’m re-addicted to it, just like when I was in 8th grade. Hmm.

Yesterday was our triplet group Easter Egg Hunt. I co-hosted it at a park in our neighborhood. It was a lot of fun…for everyone else. I mean, I had fun, but the boys were not in any mood to run around with other kids. They just wanted Mommy and Daddy to hold them. Sigh. But it was so darn cute to see all the triplets (and quads!) running around.

We also introduced the boys to bubbles. Oh my. They were absolutely entranced by them.

Hmmm…

Hi! I am Linus!

Hi! I am Oliver!

Hi! I am Miles!

April Fool’s! That’s really Miles, then Linus, then Oliver.

Okay, that was lame. But just a preview of things to come, I imagine. Aren’t you just so excited for the day that they can switch places on us? And I’m sure it won’t be only on April 1.

But never fear, I have gotten quite good at telling them apart. So there will be no fooling Mommy!

Here is an easy diagram of how to tell the boys apart at a glance. Well, except for Oliver. Heh.
differences

There. Now I expect that everyone will be able to tell them apart from now on.

Little Picassos

Well, two anyway.

Yesterday when I went to pick up the boys from daycare, I was happily surprised to see that they’d done their first artwork! They did fingerpainting on half the page, then it was folded in half to do a mirror image (and presumably blot up some of the excess paint applied by the overexuberant artists.)

Oliver was relatively restrained:

Miles went all out:

And Linus…well, Linus:

Aww!

Weekend

So I had a fun weekend with the boys. We went to Baton Rouge. I hung out with my cousins. (My baby cousin Molly has this gorgeous condo that I’m thinking of moving into. Maybe we can be squatters. She works a lot. She might not even notice. Yeah!)

We went to a baby shower for a high school friend who’s having twins. The boys were pretty well-behaved. We went with Ren, who kept them quiet by feeding them petit fours. Miles walked up to a group of older ladies, stood around with them while they chatted, then raised him arms up, demanding to be picked up. Of course he was indulged. How could one resist? (I suspect the fact that they were standing near the petit four tray had something to do with his desire to be picked up.)

But mostly, we hung out at Grandee and Larry’s house. It’s loads of fun for babies.

They loved standing at the backdoor waiting for Larry’s dog Snoopy to come by. (Yes, Linus and Snoopy. V cute, yes?) Then they’d either yell ‘CAT CAT CAT CAT!!!!” or “QUACK QUACK QUACK QUAAAACK!!!” at her.

And then Linus got her!

Sweet Oliver

Grandee, can we go outsiiiiiide??

Grandee also has a nice kitchen with lots of drawers in which to smush our fingers:

Now, off the subject. Anyone have any suggestions for recipes? Things that are easy and inexpensive to make? That the boys might eat? That don’t have celery in them? I need to branch out.

Stuff

Kristina said I needed to post again, so here I am, posting again. I feel like I don’t have a lot to say, but I guess I can come up with some stuff.
– We almost brought Linus to the hospital last night. This breathing stuff sucks. He’s much better this morning, though. It was just the same old stuff. He was having trouble breathing but once we got some steroids into him and some breathing treatments, he started sounding so much better. Thank you, my dear husband, for getting up with him at 1 am to give him that middle of the night treatment. 🙂

– I got new glasses! That’s not very exciting either. I kind of like them, but they’re not terribly feminine. Here’s a picture I took of myself with my cell phone this morning. They’re kind of crooked in this picture, though. Oops. And I’m fake smiling. Heh.
glasses

– We’re going to Baton Rouge tonight (me and the boys) because I have a baby shower to go to tomorrow. It’s for a friend from high school who is having twin boys. Now, I’d usually scoff at twins (pshhhh, so easy*) but she also has an older kid (2 or 3, I think) which adds a whole ‘nother dimension. So I shall not scoff. But I do love baby showers. There’s usually cake there.

– I’m also supposed to be going out with my cousins tonight, after the boys go to bed. That’s weird, I’ve never done that before. Should be fun. Am looking forward to it. Am not looking forward to getting up at 7 with the boys, though. I hope it’s an earlyish night. Hmm.

– Coldplay is coming to New Orleans! Eeeee! Am so excited. Hey, anyone want to babysit (actually, sit and watch TV while the boys sleep) on Tuesday, June 9? Pleeeeease?

Now for a few pictures. They’re kind of dark, because I had to use our old camera, which isn’t great.

Daddy, read us Goodnight Gorilla for the 3,429,761st time!

Well, at least someone knows where their nose is…

*of course I’m joking, my lovely friends with twins!

15 month stats

Well, I was waiting to post this until after the boys’ 15 month ped visit, but I keep leaving the sheet with the stats in the car, so I’ll just post approximations now and fix it later. Not like anyone really cares, right?

So at 12 months, these were their stats:
Linus: 20 lbs, 8.5 oz (10th-25th); 30.25″ long (50th-75th); HC 46cm (25-50th)
Oliver: 20 lbs, 12.5 oz (25th); 30″ long (50th); HC 47cm (50th-75th)
Miles: 19 lbs, 12 oz (10th); 30″ long (50th); HC 46.5cm (50th)

And now at 15 months: (holy cow, they have done some growing!)
Linus: 23 lbs, 15 oz (50-75th); 31.5″ long (50th-75th); HC 47cm (50th)
Oliver: 23 lbs, 8 oz (25-50th); 31.25″ long (50-75th); HC 48cm (75th)
Miles: 22 lbs, 3 oz (10-25th); 31″ long (50th); HC 47.5cm (50th)

So yeah, they’re growing! Wow!

And now, a few pictures from yesterday. (My point and shoot is broken, so while it’s getting repaired I likely won’t have as many pictures of the boys. These are from my big camera.)

Oliver crawling in the mud

15 months old!

Oops, I forgot to post this last week. Well, actually, I didn’t forget, I just didn’t have time in the midst of all the travelling and such.

15 months old

15 months old! Can you believe it? Not me. I still think that they haven’t changed much since they were 10 months old. What do you think?

10 months old!

Okay, maybe just a little. Heh.

Anyway, they’re doing SO MUCH right now. Just this morning, when I dropped them off at daycare, I noticed their teacher putting them at a table and chairs to eat! Not high chairs! And she asked if it was okay if they tried napping in cots instead of cribs. Ack! Where did my babies go??? They’re still babies. Heck, I’m still my mom’s baby. Right, mama?

Some more things they’re doing now that are heart-wrenchingly adorable…
– they know their nose. Oliver will even say “no” when he points to it. (Not in a negative sense, but in a shortened version of the word kind of way.)
– Linus knows his belly. Maybe they all do, but I haven’t seen evidence yet.
– they give hugs. Linus will walk up to you (if you’re sitting) and put his head on your chest or shoulder. While in California, Jennifer and I had him walking between us, giving us hugs and kisses. Ack!
– they give kisses. Open mouthed ones, of course.
– Oliver will put his hands out and repeat “All done!” if you ask if he’s all done. (So I suspect it’s more mimicking than actually replying, but it’s darn cute.)
– Miles and Linus are walking more than crawling
– Oliver is walking a bit, but is still more unsteady than his brothers
– Not something they’re doing, but I changed their carseats to forward-facing. I really wanted to wait until they were older, but because of the car situations while I was away, I had to turn them all around, and I really don’t want to turn them back. It’s so much easier to get them in and out now (but I know that’s not a good reason.) Anyway, it’s great to look in the rearview mirror and see them looking at me!
– They finally figured out how to splash in the tub, and it makes them giggle so much. It’s so cute.

I will probably end up adding more to this post throughout the day as I remember more cute things they’re doing.

Linus and Mommy go to California

I could make this a very long recap, but so that I don’t put everyone to sleep, I will make it snappy. But we did a lot, so it will be sorta long.

Friday
Got up while it was still dark out. Sob. Got Linus up and dressed and to the airport. Had much fun lugging 24 lb baby in Bjorn (over the weight limit, shhhh), suitcase, huge carseat, and diaper bag. Made it onto plane without incident. We were moved to Economy Plus (yay!) and had our own row, as well as empty rows in front of and behind us.

Linus was pretty good on the plane. Finally fell asleep as I rocked him while walking up and down the aisle. Whew!

After arriving, met up with some friends at a cute little park. That was awesome. Linus was the oldest kid there and he enjoyed showing off his walking skills. Nearly stole his friend Declan’s truck. After leaving that, I thought I lost my wallet. Found it. Whew!

Went with Evan to pick up Ellie from daycare. Cute story…she was sitting in the front office when we arrived. Evan thought she was in trouble. Turns out, the principal said she kept saying she was “waiting for Linus.” Principal thought Linus was imaginary friend? Didn’t know who she was talking about. Evan pointed out Linus, and confusion was cleared up. But how sweet that Ellie didn’t want to play with her friends, she wanted to wait for her baby cousin! Gaah!

Went back to their house, went to Trader Joe’s (why why why don’t they have them here? Hmmph.) and Evan cooked dinner. Linus likes slurping spaghetti noodles. There was much playing going on.

Friday
Went to Disneyland! Met up with Jennifer’s dad and brother and sister in law and nephews. Fun! Linus liked: teacups, cotton candy, fast rides. Linus did not like: strollers, lame baby rides that don’t do anything, mouse ears. Linus LOVED: It’s a Small World (it may be slow, but it’s eye candy for babies.)

Saturday
Went to the beach! Linus did not enjoy the water nor the sand, but did like the swings.

(he would not let go of my cell phone for practically the entire trip)

That evening, Linus and I took a trip to visit our triplet friends and their parents. So fun! I got really lost going to their house, though, and a trip that should have taken 15 minutes took almost an hour. Dang! So we didn’t get to hang out as long as I would have liked. But it was so great. I’m so glad we got to meet up! The kids played together, it was ridiculously cute. Brian and Cindy have genius babies, too. And next time I go, I may swap out one of my boys for Alexis. She’s such a girl! Ack!

Anyway, their triplets are just a few days younger than the boys, so Cindy and I were pregnant at the same time, and would comment on each other’s blogs all the time. It was so awesome to finally meet her and Brian and Alexis and Zachary and Jackson in person. I already felt like I knew them, so it was v comfortable, not awkward at all.

Sunday
Just a relaxing day. My old high school roommate Betsy came over, and we took a walk to Trader Joe’s. I’m telling you, it’s my second favorite store in LA (first being Paper Source.) Later, Jennifer and I went to Old Town Pasadena to go in some of the shops (like Tiffany) and have a snack at a cute little bakery place.

Meanwhile, Evan turned Linus into Linda.

Monday
Linus and I took the shuttle to the airport and had a thankfully uneventful flight home. He fell asleep literally as we took off, and woke up 3 hours later. Thank goodness there was a movie on the plane, even though it was about football. Better than nothing!

So now we are home. Linus was definitely happy to see his Daddy and his brothers, but I’m not sure Miles and Oliver even noticed he was gone. Ha!

Boo!

Okay, seriously. It’s clear someone’s been cheating hardcore, because Oliver is no longer in the running. I guess he was the 26th cutest baby in the greater New Orleans area. Oh well. It’s also obvious (duh) that people aren’t voting for the actual cutest baby, but for the baby they know. Although my brother actually said that he didn’t think Oliver was the cutest baby in the contest. WHAT? He said I could have picked a cuter picture. WHAT? Hmmph.

Anyway, thanks for voting everyone!

Linus’s turn!

Well, I guess he just didn’t want to be the odd man out. On Sunday, Linus started showing the same symptoms that earned Miles and Oliver a trip to the ER two weeks prior. I was in touch with his ped all day, doing everything we could to avoid the trip, but in the end, he needed to go. But this time, the lucky duck got admitted! So we spent the night in the luxurious digs of the Children’s Hospital.

Really, it wasn’t too bad. I slept on a “bed” (glorified window seat, really) that was approximately 2 inches longer than me. Next to a window on a freezing night. With a couple of thin blankets. But it could have been so much worse. I know this.

He’s fine now, just needed to get some breathing treatments and they wanted to monitor him. It’s funny, really. The three boys had pretty much identical symptoms, but got three different doctors at the ER. It just goes to show how doctors all have their different ways of treating the same illness. I have my own little experiment group here.

The doctor thinks he’ll be fine to travel with me to Los Angeles on Thursday. Fingers crossed! If not, I may have to make a substitution. Not that any of them know/care/will remember in 20 years. Tomorrow we have a follow-up visit with the ped, so we’ll see what she says.

Before the hospital visit, we had a really fun weekend. On Saturday, I took the boys to the zoo and met up with my friends Mandy and Mike and their 17 month old, Annabel. I’m just glad we went on Saturday! I just hope Annabel doesn’t end up sick. Linus was fine on Saturday, he only started acting sick on Sunday. At least it was only a cold, nothing major.

Linus and Miles are walking a lot more now. I will have to get a video of it…

Wear pink on Friday, February 27

Tomorrow, Friday, February 27, I urge you to wear pink (yes guys, even you!) to honor the memory of Sydney and Carynne, who died earlier this week of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (type 1), also known as Werdnig-Hoffman disease. Their funerals are tomorrow, and it also would have been their six month birthday.

These sweet babies have touched so many lives. Please think of them and their family tomorrow. And you can do something to help. Sign the Petition to Cure SMA, in the hopes that a cure can be found for this horrible disease. SMA is the number one genetic killer of children under the age of 2.
