December 2001

(Going way back in my archives and finally moving some stuff from December 2001 to my blog from the HTML file it was in before.)

Didn’t run much this weekend. To be honest, haven’t gone running since Thursday morning. Friday morning, I just needed to sleep and we went out Friday night, so I wasn’t up to running Saturday morning, and then I went to Baton Rouge on Saturday afternoon, so running was out then too. But yesterday Ren and I went to the Tulane gym and I did a bit of cross-training. 30 minutes on the bike and 20 minutes on the treadmill. I did the treadmill first, I think I would have done better on the bike first to warm up, but I sweated a lot and my heart was pounding, so I got a good cardio workout no matter what. I’m so not used to gyms that I get a bit flustered. I could have gone longer on the treadmill, but I was thirsty, and my water bottle was on the ground and I didn’t want to stop the treadmill to take a drink. I didn’t notice until it was too late that there was a drink holder built onto the treadmill. Sigh. Next time.

Also, I may have a new training partner at some point. Kristina’s friend Virginia from law school is training for a half Ironman triathalon in May, and she needs a running partner. And Kristina told her I was slow, and she said that was okay! Yay!

Chris did his 19.5 mile run this weekend, and he said he’d drive to New Orleans when I have to do one of mine so we can do it together. Woo hoo!

Motivation, motivation, motivation. I’m losing it. I know what I’m supposed to do to get more motivated, but let me say here that the smartest thing I ever did was send in my deposit for the London Marathon. I can totally see myself bagging running forever, if not for that $200. I really want to love running. I know I like it, but I’m afraid I don’t love it yet. I’m definitely obsessed with it, that’s a start. 😀

I suppose I need to do what the magazines and books say. Vary my course. Run with different people. Etc, etc. But what I really want to do is just sleep and play the Harry Potter Playstation game. (Ack! My secret is out! This is my new addiction! I suppose it’s fortunate that we only rented the game and have to return it at noon today. Sad, but true. I will have to force myself not to re-rent it this afternoon.)

On the other hand, I really didn’t want to run this morning. But I got up anyway. Even though Kristina didn’t. On a day when I just wanted to go back to sleep, I got up and ran alone. Impressive. So I guess I’m not as bad off as I thought. I think I’ll just buy another running book. That usually helps. 😀 And I think once I start my real marathon training (in THREE WEEKS!!!) I’ll be better off.

It has suddenly occurred to me that I always run less in the week preceding a race, for whatever reason. I can’t remember why I didn’t for the other races (laziness, I reckon) but we have the two mile race coming up this weekend, so I’ll just say I’m tapering. (ha ha)

Oh, should say what I did when I went running this morning. “Speedwork” again. Ran around the park once. Took 21 minutes. Ahh, 11:45 mile. That is fast for me! I consider it a compromise for when I don’t want to run, as I get the running over with fast but I’m still doing some good.

Wednesday, 5 December 2001

Really, I don’t deserve to write anything today, but I want to remember how this feels. I want to be able to go back and read what exactly it feels like not to get up and run. I feel icky. Blobby. Lazy. Tired. I have a headache. And all for what? A few more minutes of sleep? (Okay, an hour.) Well, since I’m tired anyway, I don’t see the point. I thought I was doing something good for myself by attempting to get a decent night’s sleep, but it didn’t really work, especially because my alarm went off at 6:45 and I just reset it to go off at 7:45. So it’s not like I got uninterrupted sleep. Hrrmph.

I am definitely running tomorrow and Friday. And let me state now my goals for the 2-mile race on Saturday.

(In order of attainability:)

Goal #1: To run it in 25 minutes. I think this is reasonable, as it is only slightly faster than our normal training pace.

Goal #2: To run it in 23:30. Doable, but difficult.

Goal #3: To run it in 22:00 to 22:30. That’s 11 minute miles, which I generally can’t sustain for very long. But I’m going to try it! Woo hoo!

Let’s seeeeee…if I’m going to have goals, I have to have rewards, right? So, here they are:

If I reach Goal #1: I can be proud of myself. Come on, I don’t really deserve anything for that one.

If I reach Goal #2: I can buy some more running socks. Ask my friend Ren, I drove her nuts on Saturday talking about (and looking for inexpensive) running socks. I did end up buying some, but they were uncushioned. I want some cushioned ones. I like the ones I got at K-mart, so if I reach this goal, I will go back and get another 2 pairs (I mean, only $5 for two pairs of Coolmax, arch-supported, cushioned running socks! You can’t beat that!)

If I reach Goal #3: Hmmmm….tough one. Might have to think about it. Ideas would be welcome here…

Thursday, 6 December 2001

Ahhhhh….I did it! And I feel so much better! I didn’t really think I’d want to get up this morning, because we went out last night (I only had one beer, but we stayed out until midnight…okay, I stayed out until midnight, Kristina and Ren dropped me off at home and went somewhere else after that.) and I didn’t think I’d want to get up after only 6 and a half hours of sleep (I need 8 hours a night. I am not one of those people who can get by on less.) Oddly, though, when my alarm went off, I popped out of bed. There was no question about hitting the snooze button or turning it off completely. Very strange.

So I went to the park, and ran 2 miles. Not great, but I figured out that I am really good at keeping a steady pace of 12 minute miles. Without trying, I was running 3 minute quarter miles. Interesting. After going around the park once (1.77 miles) I sped up for the last quarter mile, which felt great. It’s fun to run fast! I only wish I could do it longer. I know, I know, in time. I’m quite happy with my two miles, but even though I slowed myself down during the first 1.75 miles, and with my speed at the end, it still took me exactly 25 minutes to do those 2 miles. Hmmmm. I guess I slowed myself down too much? I suppose I spoke too soon yesterday, saying 25 minutes was a really easy goal. I mean, it’s obviously doable, but not without the big kick of speed at the end. I guess I’ll have to just go faster (a little) during the first part. Hmmm.

I think next week I’m going to start running the first week of the marathon training program, and I’m just going to do that until the training actually starts on December 24. That’s only (gulp) two weeks from Monday! Ack! So I’ll basically do Week 1 three times. I think that’s a good idea. That week consists of Monday: 3 miles, Wednesday: 4 miles, Thursday: 3 miles, Saturday: 5 miles. Oooh, and Kristina and I are going to Houston on the 14th, so I can do the long run in the woods (well, okay, a paved path through a wooded neighborhood, but that’s as outdoorsy as this girl gets.)

Friday, 7 December 2001

This morning, Kristina and I headed out to the levee to run, for a change of pace. And that way, we could go out-and-back, instead of in circles like at the park. We decided to run for 20 minutes, then turn around. The first ten minutes seemed to take forever, but then, when I looked at my watch to see if twenty minutes had passed yet (thinking it really would have only been 16 or 17 minutes) over 21 minutes had passed! We were amazed. So we turned around and ran back to where we had started. Total time, 42 minutes. We estimated how far we went (the road doesn’t completely follow the levee, so it wasn’t accurate) and it was only around 3 miles. Hopefully a bit more, like 3.5. Yeah, right. We were going sloooooow. But whatever. It upsets Kristina more than me that we’re not fast. I told her we don’t have to stay together tomorrow at the race.

It was a nice morning, weather-wise. A bit chilly (probably low to mid 60s) and foggy. My glasses kept getting little droplets of water on them and I’d have to clean them off. It was nice. There are train tracks right by the levee, and a train came by. Nice atmosphere, except the train kept blowing it’s *(@#&* horn.

Overall, I’m happy with today’s run. It is the longest we’ve ever run (the previous record was our 5K at 40:05, so we ran for two minutes longer than before.)

Saturday, 9 December 2001 – RACE

celebrationCelebration in the Oaks 2 mile Run/Walk
4:00 p.m.

Today, Kristina and I ran the Celebration in the Oaks 2 mile Run/Walk and we were awesome! The race is through City Park, which at Christmastime was a huge light display called, yes, the Celebration in the Oaks. The race route is through the streets of the park, with big lighted displays to look at while we ran. It is a big race, and the beginning was really crowded. (A lot of walkers were at the front. Sigh.) Kristina created a path that I followed, and it took us about half a mile to get to where we could sort of settle into a pace. We hit the one mile mark at exactly 12:00 (this is by my watch, not the official start time, since it took over a minute to get to the start line) and Kristina urged me to run faster. I had told her she could go on ahead without me, but I’m glad she didn’t because I wouldn’t have done nearly as well if she hadn’t been pushing me to go faster. There was a block left (but you have to turn a corner first, so we couldn’t see the finish line and didn’t know it was so close) when I looked at my watch and it said 22:something. I sprinted to the finish, and when I stopped my watch, it said 22:55! Our last mile was 10:55! I can’t believe I ran an entire mile at that pace! It was incredible! Yay!

We didn’t place or anything, they don’t even give finishing tags after the first 500 runners, and we certainly weren’t those, but it was a fun race, and I’m proud of myself for doing it so fast!

treeMonday, 10 December 2001

Okay, today was the first day of my pre-training training. I am going to do the first week of training (3-4-3-5) for the two weeks before the first week. (Does that make any sense at all??? Put it this way – I’m doing the first week of training three times.)

So this morning, we went for three miles. It was weird to be running for distance, not time. We ran around the park and the fly, which I think is three miles. I took my pedometer, but Ren was playing with it and set my stride length to 7 feet (I wish) and so I set it to what I thought it had been at, but clearly it was not 2.5 feet either, or we actually ran 4 miles, with 10 minute miles. Not likely. But we ran for about 40 minutes, and during the park portion, where there are quarter miles marked, we were running exactly 12:40 miles. So we probably averaged 13 minute miles over the whole route. However, a train came by so we had to stop for a minute or so to wait for it. But there’s a good story here – the train stopped right in front of the path, and there was this woman in front of us who ran in front of the train (it was actually moving veeeerrrrry slowly) but we closed our eyes and waited to hear the splat. Then the train started to back up, and we realized she probably knew what she was doing, so we crossed in front of the train. We waved to the conductor and he gave us two short toots of the horn. It was sweet.

No running tomorrow, but hopefully I won’t feel icky about it. I just have to remember that it’s a rest day, not a day when I was too lazy to get up.

Oh yeah, and that’s a picture of our Christmas tree. Isn’t it nice?

Tuesday, 11 December 2001

Today is a rest day. I don’t feel icky like I did last time I didn’t run before work (Wednesday, I think) because this is a planned rest day. A necessary rest day. A rest day built into my training schedule. I must embrace these rest days, not feel lazy because I’m taking them. (Really, I can’t believe I’m complaining about feeling lazy. It used to be my reason for living, my outstanding quality, the very core of my being. Hmm.)

Anyway, I’ve been so busy at work, filling packages and the like for UKtoYou that I’ve been running around the office all day anyway, plus lifting heavy things (like boxes of plum pudding – you wouldn’t believe how heavy those puppies are!) and such. So the fact that I’m not just sitting at my desk all day long, and probably won’t be until Mardi Gras is over, is good. Especially considering Erin, one of the girls in the office, brought a plate of cookies in yesterday. I ate one. Or two. Ummmmm. Maybe 3. They were small! Ish.

Wednesday, 12 December 2001

Today was our first 4 mile run. Woo! 4 miles! Longest run ever, in both distance and time. Woo hoo! It wasn’t so bad, I was ready for it to be over when it was, though. We ran the levee, out and back, and the wind was in our face the whole way back. Made it a bit of a struggle. But it was good, took us 56 minutes, give or take, so we ran 14 minute miles.

I’m proud of our accomplishment…now for a 5 miler on Saturday, while we visit our friends in the Woodlands. (See here for the story of the path that almost killed me last time I ran it…not this time!)

I just don’t have much more to say today. Work has kept me so busy that when I get home from work, I just flop on the couch and read or watch TV. I have no problem with that. I do lift the hand weights for a while before I go to sleep, to try to tone my arms, but other than that, nothing.

Thursday, 13 December 2001

Ha ha, today was a bad day! I don’t feel bad about it, though. It was just one of those days when running just wasn’t happening for us. We got to the fly, ready to do our 3 miles, but it was in the mid to high 70s, with high humidity. Not mid-December weather. No, this is spring in Louisiana. Anyway, we ran by the river, within area bounded by the train tracks when we (of course) heard a train coming. There was no way were were going to make it past the tracks before the train got there, so we ended up stopping and stretching while the train went by. It didn’t take very long. Meanwhile, Kristina was in a really bad mood. My left calf was tight, and by the time we got to the park about ten minutes later, I didn’t feel like running either. It was just one of those days. The thought of going all the way around the park (which is only a mile and a half, we’re not talking about huge distances here) made both of us want to stop. So we did. We walked a little further, then turned around, and walked back to the car. We ended up running probably a mile and a half and walking a half a mile or so, but neither of us were bothered by it. After all, as Kristina pointed out, this was the first time since we have been able to run 30 minutes that we haven’t. This time, it was choice, not inability.

I think it was because of the long run yesterday that I didn’t feel up to running today. I think I should schedule the mid-week medium run the day after a short run and the day before a rest day instead of a rest day before and a short run after. Hmmm. Or I can move the short run to the day before the long run, but I think it’s best to have that sandwiched by rest days.

Next run: 5 miles…uh oh!

Friday, 14 December 2001

No run today! Office Christmas party…lunch (and $1.00 martinis) at Commander’s Palace (same place I went with mom and her new man) and then Kristina’s picking me up, and on to Houston. Yay!

Monday, 17 December 2001

Fun weekend in Houston! Kristina and I drove in Friday evening (after my lunch…yummm…I had too many Cosmopolitans) and went to see my friend Mike’s band play (here’s their website, I designed it). Saturday, we got up and went for what we thought was going to be a 5 mile run. I had asked Mike the night before for a 5 mile route, and he gave me what he said was slightly over 5 miles, but actually, when we drove it, was just four. However, the path was curvier than the road, so I think it made it more like 4.25 miles. Or something. It took us just under an hour, and I know we weren’t running 15 minute miles, so it had to be more than just 4 miles. Anyway, a four-miler isn’t bad, neither of us were disappointed that we ran that far. It was easy.

This morning, I ran at the park alone, because Kristina went out last night after we got in from Houston. It was very humid and pretty warm so I just went around the park once. (I don’t feel safe doing the whole fly loop alone, it’s very secluded and there are usually cars parked in the parking spaces along the road, with strange men in them. Hmmmm….) I did run it pretty fast (21 minutes) so I’ll consider this my speedwork run. 😀 I think I may use one of my short runs per week as a speedwork run, maybe run it at a faster pace than usual. We’ll see.

Tuesday, 18 December 2001

No run this morning. I had to bring Kristina to the airport at 5:30 a.m. Ack! I was barely awake. Then I went back to sleep. Then I overslept. Whoops!

Though today is supposed to be a rest day, I think I’m going to go to the gym with Ren and run my 4 miler on the treadmill. If I wait until tomorrow to do it, I’d do it at the gym anyway, and I don’t want to wait two and a half days between runs. Plus, I just can’t do four miles at the park, it’s too boring, and without Kristina there aren’t any other routes I want to do. Maybe I’ll get up early one day, maybe Thursday, and go to Lafreniere Park in Metairie and run the 2 mile loop there a couple of times. I’ve never been there, but it looks good. I’ve heard good things about it. Hmmm.

I’m also trying to figure out how to fit in racing with training. I love doing 5Ks (haven’t done anything longer yet, so I can’t say about 10Ks or anything) but my weekend runs aren’t going to be 3 miles again anytime soon (or ever, I suppose) so what do I do? Do the long runs on Sunday if the race is on Saturday? Don’t run the race too hard? I’m not going to have time to reschedule my long runs during the week, I’m far too slow for that. 😀 Hmmm. Something to think about.

There’s a 9K in mid-January I’d like to do, so that’s 5.6 miles on a day when I’m supposed to do 7. I suppose if I do “race” it, then it’s ok that it’s 1.4 miles less than I’m supposed to run that day. I mean, it’s only one run out of many. But the 5K in late January, when I’m supposed to be doing 10 milers will be trickier. I guess I don’t have to count it at all, just run it somewhat slowly and do the long run on Sunday. That would work if the race is on Saturday, but if it’s on Sunday, I won’t want to race the day after my long run. Hmmm.

Wednesday, 19 December 2001

Ooooooof! Last night I may have overdone it a tad. Well, not really, but I’m sure feeling a little sore today! I went to the gym with Ren and we got there half an hour before her aerobics class was to start, but I got immediately on a treadmill. This meant that I had an hour and a half before she was to be done with her class. Not a big deal, it took me an hour to get through the four miles I had planned, plus the cool down. Boy! Treadmills these days are fancy! I programmed this treadmill for my 4 mile goal, and I could set pace/speed and look at how many calories I was burning (over 600 total! Woo!) and how far I’d gone. Well, I know those aren’t exactly new features on treadmills, but this one was so nice! And it had a heart rate monitor thing, but it didn’t seem to work (or I couldn’t figure it out) because my heart was either beating at 67 beats per minute or 199. So either I was dead or dying. Don’t think it was accurate. Ha ha. That’s okay, I’ll be getting my own HRM soon (Santa willing!) I had the incline set at 1% but sometimes made it 1.5% just for fun. (Wooooo!) About half way through it, my feet started going numb, and my right calf was a little sore but I didn’t want to stop the treadmill to retie my laces or stretch because that would have messed up my calculations and my rhythm. I think that is one of the main downsides of treadmills. You can’t just easily stop. Or if you do, you have to reacclimate to non-moving ground again. It’s just a pain. Plus, my lower back was aching, but I know that’s just because it isn’t strong enough. I hope I also get the balance ball I asked for so I can strengthen my core. Exciting!

So after I got off the treadmill I had half an hour before Ren’s class ended. I stretched a little and decided to walk around the indoor track for a little while. It’s one of those 9-times-around-per-mile tracks but it’s so lovely and air-conditioned (the treadmill area is not so well ventilated) that I couldn’t resist. Plus, I was trying to get my land legs back. But walking wasn’t cutting it for me, so I started to run. What a difference! The ground felt so hard (though the track is relatively soft) which sucked but at the same time I felt like I was flying (and I know I wasn’t running that fast!) It was fun. Plus, with the air conditioning vents blowing cold air on you almost constantly, it’s a little like running in heaven. I ran around 3 or 4 times, then got bored with it (see, it’s not ideal) so I stretched a little more. With 10 minutes before Ren was finished, I got on one of the stationary bikes and leisurely cycled for 10 minutes or so.

A good workout, overall. I worry that I did too much, though the track and the bike were hardly taxing. I think I may go with her sometimes on my off days, or my short run days and do the aerobics class. It focuses on abs, back, and thighs (or is it abs, butt and thighs? either is good with me) which seems like it would help with my running. Or at least be some interesting cross-training. Ren says she can barely move after the class. Sounds good!

I overslept this morning (the electricity went out in our apartment overnight, so my alarm clock went out) so I feel great today! Nice and well-rested! I wouldn’t have woken up at all, I don’t think, if it hadn’t been for Stinky meowing for her food.

Tomorrow I’ll run again, 3 miles. Maybe I’ll go to the levee.

Cool! Found an article from The Times with quotes from runners about the London Marathon. One is from Mike Henry, the Reluctant Runner! Yay! Cool! Here’s the link, hope it still works! If not, here’s what Mike said:

“I have no views on why the Flora London is the best marathon in the world because I have not run it yet. But I do know how to lose 17lb in ten weeks because I have done that while training for the 2002 race. Mike Henry”

Thursday, 20 December 2001

Ahhhh, life is wonderful! The sun shines, the temperature has dropped, Pam is a happy, happy girl!

Nothing to do with running, though. Didn’t run this morning. Was supposed to. Why not? Well, Sarah, my business partner/boss called me last night at 11, as I was preparing to go to sleep to get up at 7 for my run. She had had a few drinks, and asked what was wrong with me. I haven’t been so very nice to her recently, instead I’ve been projecting my frustrations with work on her. I have felt for a long time that she no longer thinks of me as a partner, but rather as an employee. Technically, I am, but we built this business from the ground up. She is the business/money/management, I am the creative/talent. Neither of us could have done anything without the other. (Well, I guess I could have been any old web designer, but nothing would have been the same, and the idea for Mardi Gras Store was all hers.)

Anyway, we hashed it out, and I told her the basis for all of my bad feelings. See, all I want from life is to live in England. And Sarah is (technically) British. She promised me a year or so ago that she would help me to live in England one day. (My goal was by the time I turned 30, which is now about 3 years away. Gulp.) However, I started to doubt that this would really happen, and started to wonder what I was doing with this company if I was going to be underpaid and still never get to live in England. (I don’t mind making a sacrifice now if it means I get to live in the UK later.)

So the upshot is that she said she wants me to be happy, and if that means living in England, then so be it. So Kristina will leave New Orleans in August, our lease will be up, and that’s our goal. For me to live in England in August. Ack! My dream, coming true much sooner than I had originally anticipated!

Of course, we have to figure out how to get me there. Set up a business? Get me hired somewhere? Freelance? Marry a British man? (ha ha) Whatever, I don’t care! So now I’m off to research ways to get a work visa…

If this didn’t make much sense, I apologize. I’m just so excited about it!

PS I’ll run tomorrow morning.

Friday, 21 December 2001

Okay, so I didn’t run this morning. But not to worry, I’m running after work. I’m getting off at 1, so I’m going to the park (hopefully with Ren) and will run in the daylight again! Well, full afternoon daylight as opposed to morning daylight. I went to dinner last night with Ren and her brother and mom and stepdad, and we didn’t get back until late, and I had to pack up and put some stuff in my car, etc, etc so no time this morning.

Also, this is the last time I’ll be able to post until after Christmas. I’ll be away from my computer (and my dreamweaver, most importantly) but I’ll write about everything I do during the little break. I’m anticipating a five miler tomorrow (Saturday), a three miler on Monday, and a four miler (with Chris, in Baton Rouge) on Wednesday morning, before I head back to New Orleans. The most crucial of these, I feel, is the five-miler tomorrow. I really have to make myself get out and do the entire five miles, alone, no matter how much I don’t want to. I still don’t know where I’m going to do it, but I’ll figure something out. It may just end up being 15 laps around my mom’s street. Yeeeps.

I’m excited about Christmas particularly this year. I realized last night that this is the first time in three years that my entire immediate family will be together for Christmas. Excepting my father, of course. But in 1998 (the first Christmas without him) my mother, sister, and I flew up to Seattle to spend Christmas with my brother and sister-in-law. It was nice, it snowed on Christmas day and everything, but it was an unreal Christmas. In a hotel room…with my mom and sister snoring on either side of me…no dad…etc…etc. This year should be much much better. I’m excited. Actually, this is the first time in three years we’ve all been together, period, not just at Christmas.

I guess if I move to England, it might be the last Christmas together for a while, too. I guess it has its downsides, too.

Wednesday, 26 December 2001

Merry (belated) Christmas! Or Happy Boxing Day if you’re in a country that celebrates it (you lucky dogs! I’m back at work now!)

I had a fantastic Christmas! Spent lots of time with my family, had a few good runs, and got lots of good stuff from Santa. Yay!

Friday, after I got off work, I went to the park to run. It was about 1:00 in the afternoon, sunny, a little warm, but beautiful. But once I started going, I was just not in the mood to run. So I walked most of it, then went home and put my cat in her carrier, and went to Baton Rouge. I didn’t feel bad that I didn’t run as far as I could have or should have. After all, my official training hadn’t started yet anyway.

Saturday, before I had to go to the airport to pick up my brother and sister-in-law, I wanted to run on my mom’s circle (as mentioned above.) I went around about four times, and God, was it boring. My shins started to hurt (I need new shoes) so I used that as an excuse to stop. Certainly didn’t want to start my training with an injury!

And now the real training begins…I will denote training days in italics. Silly.

Week 1, Day 1
On Monday, my sister-in-law and I went around the circle, 11 times to be exact. She walked while I jogged (oops, I mean ran) alongside her, and we had a nice conversation and though I wasn’t going very fast, it was a nice start to my official training. It probably ended up being a little more than 3 miles, but I walked the first and last loops.

Tuesday was no day for running for me (no time!) but I did get lots of good loot. The running watch I wanted (a Timex Rush V02) and a Polar A3 Heart Rate Monitor and a Camelbak Flashflo (which Chris got me too…so now I get credit at Road Runner Sports…yay!) and Jeff Galloway’s book, Marathon, plus my sister-in-law gave me a set of real British pint glasses, which was the coolest thing ever. She had to bring those on the plane! She’s so swell! And a cool book on London, and an Amazon.co.uk gift certificate, and some earrings, and…etc, etc, etc. We gave my mom a DVD player and some DVDs which she loved, so I’m happy about that. Everyone was in good spirits, and everyone liked their presents, and my anal-retentive brother didn’t make everyone take turns opening presents one at a time. Yay!

Week 1, Day 2
Today, Chris and I went for a four mile run before I had to head back to New Orleans to go to work. We went to the LSU lakes, and we each wore the HRMs that we got for Christmas. It was fun comparing our heart rates (mine were invariably higher than his, but that’s no surprise.) The pace was not bad, it was definitely manageable, and I was extremely pleased to see that we did the four miles in 50 minutes! A 12:30 pace! Not bad at all! I’m quite happy with that, for such a long run. I wish I knew where the mile splits on that route were, so I could have used my handy new watch to record them. 😀

I’m starting to get intimidated by the distances in my training, but I decided I’m just going to take them one day at at time…no pressure, don’t think ahead, just do what needs to be done.

Week 1, Day 3
This morning, I got up and went to the park to run my three miles. Yay! And I did it! I’ve had so much trouble running at the park lately that I was sure I’d be unable to do it (yeah, that’s the attitude to have, I know) but I got there, and just started running. I honestly think that running without headphones helped. Also, it was a gorgeous cold morning, which didn’t hurt.

I couldn’t decide how I wanted to do the 3 miles on the 1.75 mile loop, it can get confusing. All those fractions! Ha ha. So I went backwards (clockwise) for 1.25 miles, then turned around and ran 1.25 miles back to where I started, then ran another half mile, then walked back to the beginning. 3 miles! And, I’m very pleased to report, I did it in 36:49, which is just over 12 minute miles (okay, okay, 12:16, of course I’ve figured it out to the second!) I seem to be getting a bit faster without trying. It used to be that I would go as slow as humanly possible, and that was 14 min/mile or slower, but now when I slow down as much as I can, it’s only about 12:45 or so per mile. Woo hooo!

I wore my new heart rate monitor, which was fun and helped pass the time too. I seemed to be in the 79-82% zone most of the time, which if I recall, is far too high for an easy run. However, I know that the range that the HRM came set with is incorrect, so I need to figure out a more correct maximum heart rate thingy. Without going to a doctor and taking expensive tests. And without running as fast as I can and killing myself. Hmmm. Need a new formula, I guess.

Last night, I blew up the exercise ball I got. Ooooh, that thing is fun! I don’t think I’ll have a problem doing my strength training now! I just don’t know how Kristina’s going to feel about having that huge ball in the living room. It won’t fit in my room, and I’m certainly not going to inflate it and deflate it every time I use it. Hmmm.

Anyway, overall, I’m pleased with my training so far. Just a liiiiitttle nervous about Saturday’s 5 miler. Yeeeeps! I hope Kristina will run it with me!

I think this is going to be my last post of 2001. Eeeep! I’m changing the journal portion of the website using Blogger.com, a cool weblog program thing. A fresh start for 2002! Also, that way, I can update whenever, not just from work. Aaand, other people can add comments and so forth. It’ll be much cooler. Woo!

No running today, it’s a rest day. Good thing, too. Didn’t get to sleep until about 1:30 a.m., as I had to pick up Kristina and then Anne’s boyfriend Bill at the airport last night. Bill’s flight didn’t get in until nearly 11, then we went home, exchanged Christmas presents and then finally went to sleep. Today I’m leaving work at noon because my sister in law and I are going to have tea at the Ritz! Yay! Exciting!

Big weekend planned…going to dinner tonight with brother, sister, etc, dinner tomorrow night with friends, big day on Sunday with party at uncle’s house in French Quarter plus football game, all with about 15 friends; New Year’s Eve on Monday, don’t know what’s planned except for a 3 miler for me. 😀

5 miles tomorrow…Anne said she’d run it with me, but I don’t really see that happening. But that’s okay.

Week 1, Day 4

Ahhhhh….just got back from my 5 miler! I had already planned to take walk breaks during my long runs, but perhaps not as many as I took today. That’s okay, I’m happy with it anyway. I got Kristina to drop me off about 4 miles down the levee from the park, then I’d do a mile in the park. However, I went at 1 p.m. , in the full sun with no shade on the levee at all. So I had to revise a bit, and walk more than I’d planned. But I ran down St. Charles Avenue for the first time ever (it’s kind of scary, with all the cars, and the streetcars, because you kind of feel like you’re on display, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be…except when I had streetcars on either side of me – only about a foot from either side. eeps!)

Anyway, I’d estimate I walked more than I ran, overall, but I’m pretty sure I also went more than 5 miles total. Hard to say, but it was hot and I even got a little sunburn. Hmmmm. I walked and ran for a total of 1:25.35, so unless I was averaging 17 minute/miles, which is highly unlikely since I was running 12:20 miles (when I ran) I had to go more than 5 miles. Yay!

Next run is a 3 miler on Monday. Kristina said she’d run it with me. Yay again!

Week 2, Day 1

It’s been quite a weekend so far. Lots of people in town, lots of drinking and going out, but lots of fun too. Just got back from a 3 miler in the park with Kristina. It’s cooooolllld here! (In the 40s I think.) I had eaten lunch too recently, and I had some heartburn, so I wasn’t able to run the whole way. But we ran 1.75 miles, walked about half a mile, and ran the rest. It’s just one of the problems with running in the midafternoon. Won’t be doing that again for a while, so it’s okay.

Of course we’re going out tonight, but it’s okay…next run isn’t until Wednesday.

I made my New Year’s resolutions:

1. To be happy with my body.
2. To keep running and continue not smoking.
3. Run the London Marathon (of course! does that count?)

Happy New Year!

November 30, 2001

We didn’t run this morning, although I sort of wanted to because it finally got cold yesterday (after our run, naturally.) The weather was cold and yucky yesterday (perfect funeral weather) but sunny and chilly today, but I was so tired last night, so emotionally drained yet my mind was racing from so many things to think about (personal/work crises) that I took a Tylenol PM so that I could sleep, but then, naturally, didn’t want to wake up. It’s okay, I needed a decent night’s sleep. Hopefully I can run tomorrow afternoon, I don’t see why not.

And, nice way to end the month…this lovely picture of Big Ben that someone sent me. I love Big Ben. It’s so beautiful! (Okay, so I mean the clock tower that holds Big Ben, but let’s not get picky about it.) I was Big Ben for Halloween in 2000. The best costume ever!

November 29, 2001

Didn’t run yesterday, was still sore from Tuesday. Got up this morning, it was humid and hot (for the end of November – about 80 degrees) and really windy and about to thunderstorm. We had planned on going to the levee and running three miles, but we decided against it, to avoid getting struck by lightning, getting tossed by the wind into the river, etc, etc. So we went around the neighborhood. For just 22 minutes. It was just not a good day for a run. The weather here is just terrible, I just wish it would get cold already.

This afternoon is Anne’s dad’s funeral. Not looking forward to that.

This weekend is a 5K that I’d like to run. I read about it in the paper today, it’s in some local runner’s memory, she recently died of breast cancer. I wonder if I can convince Kristina or Ren to run it with me.

November 27, 2001

Anne’s dad died last night. He was in surgery to have his hip replaced (he wanted to be mobile his last few months) but his heart stopped. Just a month after he was diagnosed, and on his birthday, no less. Well, at least his last day was happy. And Anne just went home on Sunday, so at least she saw him recently. She’s coming in again this morning, I’m going to get her from the airport. For someone who is terrified of flying, she’s doing pretty well. Kristina and I are beginning to feel a little cursed, we used to be the only members (that we knew) of the Dead Dad Club. I think Anne’s doing okay…she actually joked to Kristina about being a new member. Sigh. Humor is all that gets us through these things.

Ran this morning. We got a bit of a late start, so we decided to run around the park as fast as we could, in preparation for the 2 mile race on December 8. It took us about 20 minutes to run around, which is pretty fast. Our first half mile was slow, but then we sped up and ran at an 11 minute/mile pace. We were speeding along! I can’t believe that some people consider that slow! Okay, most people. It was fast to us! Anyway, now I’m sore. Think I’ll stick to the slower but longer runs from here on out.

November 25, 2001

I have decided that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Not because of the food (which, admittedly is very good, but only makes me feel ill afterwards) but because it’s the only holiday where you get a long weekend and the holiday is at the beginning, not the end. Most holidays you spend all of your time off before the big day, preparing for it, and then you need another vacation after the holiday. Christmas and Easter are two prime examples of this. But Thanksgiving Day is the first day of your holiday, and then you have a really long weekend after that. Lovely.

Thursday morning, while my mom baked her pies and make her oyster dressing (mmmmm…) Kristina and I went for a run in my old neighborhood. After my dad died, Kristina came to live with me and my mom (for which I will be forever grateful to Kristina for, and one reason she will always be my very best friend on earth) and helped me to take care of my mom (in an emotionally supportive way.) We lived in the house my dad died in, which my mom has since moved out of. But the neighborhood we lived in was far more conducive to running than the one my mom lives in now, which is basically just a .33 mile circle. Gets dull. So we went back to the old neighborhood (typical suburbia: ranch houses, no sidewalks, teenagers trying to run you off the road.) But we were able to run our furthest time ever! 42 minutes, and a 5K, as it turned out. We drove the path afterwards. It was 2 minutes longer than our Race for the Cure 5K, which I could be depressed about, but as this was just a leisurely run, I won’t be. I’m far more happy that I ran for longer than ever before. A nice run, good for making room for the massive amounts of food that were ingested later.

We didn’t run again until this afternoon. Kristina, Ren, and I went to LaSalle Park, in Kenner, which has a path around some soccer fields and another path around Zephyr Stadium, for the New Orleans minor league baseball team. It’s a nice path, a bit too sunny for such a hot (!!! it’s almost *@#&% December!) day, but has some nice shaded areas, and most importantly, it’s different. Yay for that! We ended up going about 2.8 miles, and for me it was 37 minutes (Ren and Kristina finished a bit faster than me.) A very good run for me.

Oh, and at Target this weekend, I signed up for a credit card, so I got a free all in one headphone radio type thing. Yay! Should be good for my long solo runs. Don’t worry, I’ll keep the volume low. Oh yeah, and we got a Christmas tree on Friday. It’s very dreamy. And I saw Harry Potter again today. I’m pathetic. But I love it!

November 21, 2001

Okay, I take back what I said yesterday about being lame and boring. Well, let me revise it. I like being lame and boring, after last night. Or how I feel this morning. Well, Anne passed the bar! And we had to celebrate, didn’t we??? (I have no regrets about being hungover this morning, it was fun. Just don’t want to do it often.)

Suffice it to say I did not run this morning. But I will tomorrow morning.

November 20, 2001

Finally, it’s getting cold! Well, ok, at least it’s starting to feel like late fall instead of early summer. This morning, I was excited that it was gray outside, instead of the usual blue, cloudless skies. Yikes. I think there’s something sick about that.

Last night, Kristina went out with some of our friends, and though I would have liked to (Anne was in town, she of the sick father) I knew if I stayed out until midnight, and even had one or two beers, there’s no way I would have gotten up to go running. Although I became lame and boring (according to Kristina) a long time ago, it’s still hard for me to believe I’d rather go running at 7 a.m. than go out with my friends. Hmmm.

But it was a good run, another solo one. Went to the park, ran 3/4 of the way around the park, then turned around, just for a change of pace. Ended up running for 34 minutes, but I did stop a few times (I stopped my stopwatch whenever I stopped) to stretch (were there too many “stop”s in that sentence?) which I think helped. I’m now convinced that the Beatles is my ideal running music. I had a really strong finish with “Roll Over Beethoven.” Ha ha. Oooh, I really want one of those iPods from Apple for Christmas. Or, if I win the lottery. I should play the lottery first. Wish i had $400 to spend on one, they are so *@#(&@* cool!

My shin was aching a little at the end…I may take tomorrow off. But then again, Thursday is Thanksgiving, I think it’s best to burn as many calories as possible before Thursday. And since Kristina doesn’t have school tomorrow, maybe she’ll want to go to the levee tomorrow morning. That might be fun. (Fun? Fun??? What has happened to me???)

November 19, 2001

What a nice weekend I had! Not stressful, got lots of free stuff, had a great run, nice weather…what more can you ask for? Friday night, we went to see Harry Potter. Oh my gosh, what a wonderful movie! I know that some critics complained that it was too much like the books, but I won’t gripe about that! I was so giddy at the beginning that it was all I could do not to laugh out loud. This little girl (about 8 years old) was sitting next to me, and every time I laughed or gasped or made any noise she just turned and stared at me. Like, what is this woman doing? It was funny. But it was fantastic, and I can’t wait to see it again. Yay!

Then on Saturday, Kristina and I went to the mall and ended up getting lots of free stuff, including some tickets to the Nutcracker on Ice. Ha ha! Should be fun. Then, our delicious dinner at Commander’s Palace and then on Sunday, we got free tickets to the Saints game from Kristina’s boss so we went to that (I’m not much of a football fan, so I wouldn’t say I was as excited as Kristina, but it was fun anyway. And we had really good seats.) And then my run (I suppose the only thing I should be writing about here) was really good too…

As I’ve complained about in the past, I have had trouble pacing myself when I run alone. I end up going too fast, then burning out early and walking too much and getting frustrated with myself, etc, etc. Well, yesterday, I finally had a good solo run. A great solo run. Kristina didn’t feel like running, so I went to the park at around 4:30 p.m. It was cool (it still hasn’t gotten cold here in Louisiana, so it was shorts and tank top weather) and it was just a nice afternoon. I had my walkman on, with a Beatles tape in (which is my favorite running music) and just went out slow. I paid attention if I started to get out of breath or if it seemed as if I was going faster than normal, and when I did, I slowed down. It was good. By the time I was ready to stop, it was getting darkish outside, so I stopped – after 33 minutes! I was very happy about that, because not only is it further than Kristina and I generally go, it was solo! So all in all, a very nice run. I was very pleased. Yay!

November 16, 2001

Harry Potter tonight! Harry Potter tonight! Yay! I can’t wait! In less than 12 hours! Yay! I can’t believe how crazy everyone has become about Harry Potter. It’s madness! Tee hee. Wish I had some kids to take with me, I think that would be fun. But there’ll be plenty in the theater, no doubt.

Good run this morning. Yesterday I wasn’t planning on running this morning, wanted to take a rest day, but last night I decided I wanted to. It was a good run. We ran around the neighborhood instead of the park. Nothing particularly exciting to say about the run, but I’m glad we did it after all. I’ll definitely rest tomorrow, because my foot was aching a little and my shins weren’t feeling great. I know I didn’t stretch very well before we started and I’ve already learned that I need to do that from when I had shin splints this summer.

I am starting to feel really bad that I’m not specifically supporting a charity for the marathon. I know I don’t have to, since I’m not running for a charity, but I want to. I’d still like to do something to do with Leukemia for Paula’s little girl, or St. Jude’s Hospital or the Ronald McDonald House or something. But then again, I’d also like to do something in my dad’s memory for the American Heart Association. (Hmmm. Is it wrong to run for American charities in London? I suppose not, eh?) I just need to decide something, especially before the holidays so I can hit my family up for money at Christmas dinner and such. But do I contact the charities and tell them? I have no idea how to go about fundraising, especially because if I do, it won’t be for any officially sanctioned fundraising drive. I suppose I will just contact some people at the charities and ask them. Yes, I will do that.

UPDATE: 2:34 p.m. Got my official entry form! Yay! Exciting! Now, I just need the plane fares to drop to about $400, and I’ll be set! Yay!

November 15, 2001

I wish I had written this yesterday, when I was in a giddy, elated mood, because now my mood has leveled out and I can’t bring myself to sound as happy as I was yesterday evening. Nothing to do with running, all about work, actually. But my website (the one I started within our company) is finally picking up and doing lots of business. We’ve been selling Christmas crackers like there’s no tomorrow, and in addition, I found out that this newspaper in California for British expats is going to write an article about us! Yay! So exciting! Success at last! Ha ha. I hope so! This business is my ticket to England, I hope. Somehow. But we didn’t get any orders overnight, so I’m a little puzzled and sad about that. Doesn’t make sense.

Running-wise, it’s been a good day at least. We went to the park, but decided to run around the fly instead, for a change of pace. It’s nice there, but it’s enclosed by train tracks, so once you get into the area, if a long train comes, you’re stuck. Fortunately, there wasn’t one today, but we sprinted past the tracks because we thought we heard one coming. 25 minutes into our run, that was pretty tough. 😀 And we ran for 31 minutes today. A bit of improvement! Tee hee. I think pretty soon I want to change my focus from 30 minutes to 3 miles. I think that would be better. Since that’s what I’ll be starting out in my training. (Starting in 5 1/2 weeks! Ack!)

November 14, 2001

Okay, am no longer going to be worried about my speed. In fact, what I really need to focus on is keeping a slow, consistent (read: sustainable) pace. From now until the end of the year or so, I’ll be running on Mondays and Wednesdays alone. Kristina has class at 8:30 on those days, so instead of both of us getting up really early, I’ll just get up at 6:45 like every other morning and go alone. The problem here is that without someone to talk to, I have a hard time judging my pace (the conversational test works quite well for me, but I’m not about to start talking to the squirrels in the park, thank you.) At least until I get a heart rate monitor. And I know that the bulk of my marathon training will be alone (Kristina did agree to do the shorter weekday runs with me, but the long weekend runs are all me) so I have to figure this out. I’m hoping it’ll be easier with a heart rate monitor. Nice, solid numbers.

All in all, though I was disappointed with this morning’s run, it wasn’t a complete waste of time. I overslept this morning. (I have my alarm clock set to NPR, and this morning all I got was some clicky noises that didn’t wake me up. Generally, I prefer waking up to the newscasters voices, but occasionally, the alarm will go off while they’re relating some particularly bad news, which, after I hit the snooze button, I incorporate into a dream. Like once, there was a shooting somewhere. That was unpleasant. But anyway, off the subject. My alarm didn’t go off.)

So anyway, I overslept until 7:15, didn’t get to the park until 7:30, and finished my half hour at 8 on the dot, which is getting late, as I have to be at work at 9. Otherwise, I would have gone around the park twice, and felt better about the whole mess. Oh yeah, it was a mess because I ran 10 minutes, walked a minute or so, ran 5 minutes, walked a few minutes, ran a few minutes, walked a few minutes. I know I can run 30 minutes. Heck, I know I can run 40 minutes! So why can I not do it alone? Arrrgh! I know it’s all in my mind. Must work on that.

November 13, 2001

Ok, so the plane crash was probably an accident. That’s good.

And today we went to the park. Yay! And we went the whole 30 minutes, barely a problem. The only thing was, I felt like we were going faster than normal, but it still took us 24:16 to go once around the park, 1.77 miles. That makes our pace still like 13:40 or something obscene. Ooooh – I know. Maybe my stopwatch is slow. Suuuuure. Maybe the park is really 2.77 miles around. Wouldn’t that be nice? Yeeeeeah, I don’t think so. I just can’t understand that. That’s even slower than normal. I mean, at some points, we did go really slowly, but at others, we sped up for a little while. Hmmm. I know I go on and on to Kristina that speed isn’t important, and I really am not all that concerned about it, but at this rate, it’ll take me 6 hours, almost exactly to finish the marathon. Woah, wait. That’s not too bad, is it? (I was thinking it would be over 8 hours or something, so 6 seems like breeze, comparably.) And the book I’m using for training stresses that I shouldn’t be concerned about time, not at all, but then I read that the London Marathon course closes in 5 hours. How is that? I know that 40,000 people don’t finish in 5 hours. Hmmmm. Well, anyway, maybe I’ll just get faster naturally. I shouldn’t think about it. I’m not going to think about it. Not yet.
